They are both excellent breeds, but the Shepherd has been so inbred for a certain "look" that they now have horrible dysplasia problems along with a whole host of other problems. Akita Inus are wonderful dogs, but you need to let them know that you are the boss. Do your homework on these breeds. All breeds have different personality traits, and health needs & problems. I think I would go with the Akita, but it really all comes down to the dog that captures your heart.
Good luck with your new doggy!

It depends on how experienced you are in training dogs. German Shepherds are better for someone who has owned dogs before and wants a dog that will learn quickly. Akitas are a bit more challenging. They are independant thinkers and so will think about whether or not they want to do what you want. If you are consistent and stubborn and really know how to train dogs then you might be ready for an Akita. Both breeds are very active so keep in mind that it will need a really good walk once or twice a day, more when it is under two years of age. Both are good guard dogs only if they are trained and socialized very well. Dogs will tolerate well behaved kids if they are raised with them. No dog likes kids who do not treat it well. My pick would be the German Shepherd if you want easy to train, but they do take a lot of work.

First of all, an Akita Inu is not a breed. Do you mean Akita or Shiba Inu?
And second, I would say German Shepherd over either of the above mentioned breeds. However, there are many other dog breeds out there that you should research.
If you have kids, you want a dog that is great with kids, not not one that can "tolerate" them.

As Sara S said, there is no breed called an Akita Inu. There is an Akita and a Shiba Inu. The Akita is a gteat breed, but can have aggression issues. They do well at guarding. The one I had was good with my kids, but my kids were older, preteens when we got him.

Akita Inu. I have one myself and she fits all the things that you mentioned. She can act like a BIG baby and she can be protective when she needs to be. She has always been great with kids and is very easy to train. They are eager to please and will always make a great dog. Plus, they are beautiful!
My opinion is go with the Akita.
Also, check out www.dogbreedinfo.com about both breeds. They give you all the information about the breed and can help you decide for sure.
I'm sure you will love whatever your dog you choose. Good luck!

Akita Inu is a breed. Inu means "dog", so it's Akita dog or Shiba dog.
I'd say go to some breeders from both of these breeds. See the dogs and how they are. Talk to breed rescues...they are honest about the pros and cons of the breeds. Then make your choice.
Akitas are wonderful, but not for everybody. For myself, I wanted protection, loyalty, for them to like my kids (but maybe not anyone else's), hiking companions, large size (my male will be around 125 lbs, and the female is around 80lbs), and independant. They need a ton of socializing, training and family interaction. Don't ever just leave them outside in a yard.

Both are excellant breeds but they both require alot of exercise on a daily basis and a romp in the yard won't get it.
I have no experience with the Akita but can tell you as a german shepherd owner that they are very easy to train.

Akita Inu because they're not too big, loyal, and are very smart. If you want a German Shepard, then expect to have a loyal/smart dog, but German Shepards need more attention than Akitas do.

German Shepherd. I have a seven month old White German Shepherd. She's wonderful. All dogs can have complications with training, but I have found that this breed is very intellegent and also protective without being needlessly aggressive.
