She is shaking, afraid to let me pick her up, and can't stand up. She hasn't eaten in 12 hours. I have a male who also got neutered. He's alittle tired because of the anistesia (sorry, spelling) but he's fine. I'm just worried about her. Is this normal?

This is very frightening and most of the answers you've gotten are great. I just wanted to add that it's possible she might be having an allergic reaction to the anestesia, which happened to my cat when she had surgery on her stomach. If you are sincerely worried for her life, lots of vets have an after-hours emergency number that you can call for advice. Even if your vet doesn't have one, check your yellow pages and see if any others do. You know your dog better than anyone else does, use your best judgement with her. Good luck, I hope she gets better asap!

was she spayed today? most vets keep females overnight is why i'm asking. with the stress of anestetic and surgery it's normal for her not to want to eat. make sure she's hydrated, and just keep a close eye on her. if she seems to not know who or where she is or seems like she's in shock call an er vet. males will do better usually because the neuter is not as invasive as a spay. she should be fine by later tonight or in the morning if she is not and hasn't gotten any worse call your vet. if you're worried call an er vet now, you know your dog best as to what's not right with how they are acting. good luck.

Watch her over night she may still be groggy from the anesthesia. It takes a while to get out of their system. The female has a much bigger operation than the male. If she still is not herself in the morning give the vet a call. Hope your baby feels better. You did the right thing getting your pups spayed and neutered.

Usually when a dog shakes after surgery it's because of pain. I would call the vet and describe these symptoms. She should be eating after 12 hours and at least drinking water. Get a hold of the vet.....

This has happened to my dog (Shetland Sheepdog) and we found out that she was given too much anistesia. My dog could hardly walk, stay awake, eat, and was shaking (alot not a little). Coming out of anistesia is weird for even a human body. Recooperation is key to feeling better. I would call the veterinarian office that you had the procedure done at and also call another vet office for a 2nd opinion. In the mean time, wrap your dog up in a blanket and cuddle with him/her to make the scared feelings go away.
Good luck

call the vet now. This is not normal. I have had 7 dogs spayed and none of them acted like this once they got home. They were actually rather layed back and quiet....all of them. Call the vet now. Did they not give you a sheet of paper for things to watch for? Did you get pain meds for your dog?

It sounds like she is having a bad reaction to the anethesia the vet gave her. I would watch her and if she doesn't eat or drink soon you need to take her back to the vet. Because your vet spayed or neutered your dog your vet should cover the cost of your dog going back to them because of complications from the surgery.

I would call the vet.

It doesn't sound quite normal. I wonder if she could have an infection and have some fever. Or if she just feels traumatized.

I would sure call my vet and if not helped .....get a second opinion. I sure hope she recovers nicely. Do call the vet though. Best Wishes!

As a vet, I would suggest calling your vet that she got spayed and asking if something happend. This is not common and I have never heard of it and I have seen alot, and done the surgery myself.

She maybe a little tender. I don't know if your vet gave you pain meds. Call the vet in the morning if she is not getting better. Don't panic.
