You can usually order a duplicate online. Go to www.google.com and google "State DMV", for example, I live in Florida, so I would need to googe "Florida DMV". The information should be on the website on whether or not you can request a duplicate online or not. Since you have a photocopy, you already have all the information you need, the drivers license number and your social security number/TIN. They don't need to photograph you, they keep a copy of your last photograph in their records. Most states don't require you to make a trip to the DMV to renew your registration, tags, pay your taxes, renew or reissue your license, etc, anymore. It's just new registrations, tags, taxes, new licenses, etc.

You will have to go to your DMV. Depending on the state you live, you will need other verification to prove who you are. NJ has a 6 point system of ID's. Photo copies are not an official identification. Originals are necessary ID purposes, and in most states, they need to be "official government issued documents. No hospital Birth Certificates but the one issued from your state or county. Credit cards are almost useless in most states as ID. Tax forms, military ID. Most states have cracked down on ID;s because of 9/11.
Go on line for your state, they should be able to give you exactly what you will need to bring in to get a duplicate license.

Good luck, and don't drive with that photocopy

if you're in India, report this immediately to the nearest police station giving them details on when and how you may have lost it. Take a copy of this First Info Report to your License issuing RTO, and make a duplicate license registration. You should receive a new licence without having to go through any tests, etc again

1 Lodge a Police complaint,and get acknowledgement
2. Apply again for a duplicate with RTO after paying the prescribed fee.
That is all. In 2 or 3 days a duplicate will be issued.

I agree that the solution is to call your DMV and ask what the procedure is to replace a lost license.

This happened to me a few years ago in Connecticut. The DMV told me to go to a DMV office, fill out the lost license form, pay the fee, get a picture taken, and walk out the door with a replacement license.

I did all that, and now I have two licenses, since the missing one turned up. I wonder whether I'm supposed to turn that one in.

1. you should file a F.I.R. with nearest police station where you think your driving licence is lost.
2. With the F.I.R. copy, apply to Regional Transport Authority RTO.
3. You should attach your lost licence number or a photocopy
4. You will be charged some nominal fees by RTO for issuing duplicate. .

You need to go to the department of motor vehicles for your state. Let them know that your license is lost and apply for a new one... No way around going because they need to photograph you. As for the photocopy, that is not a valid ID for the police, credit purchases, anything you may need notarized etc. Sorry, gotta go face the local dmv.
