She's probably on the smarter side of the scale, but this early, there's no real indicator of what is advanced or not?? My daughter could also count to 12 at that age, actually earlier, and i'm pretty sure that's around average. I have a nephew I would call a little slow, compared to my daughter, but he was tested, and the doctor's told my sister he was advaced for his age... he's 2 and a half and can only say every day words.... so I guess, unless your child is really slow, and possibly has a learning disability, then every child is average ?? Or if she can count to a thousand, at age 2, then she's advanced, lol

That's good, I don't know if it's advanced or not. My girls both were counting early. My youngest could count to 12 when she was a little less than 2, but she didn't understand what that all meant until she was a little over 2. Now she's three and can count to 100 with a little help. Check out a copy of What to Expect The Toddler Years, that'll tell you.

I would say (maybe) she is a little advanced. Both of mine got to somewhere between10-15 when counting at around 3 and a half years old.

But on the other hand my 2 yr old nephew can count well past 20 and knows his ABC's so maybe there is no average.

I think every child is different and a lot of it has to do with how much time the parent has available to work with the child, good luck with your niece.

Counting to twelve is kind of like singing the ABC song. If they hear it often enough they will start repeating it. These are both great things for a child to learn but not necessarily an indicator of intelligence. Every child picks up words at their own pace and in their own order. If she actually has an understanding of what the numbers mean then that's impressive.

Every child is different. Some excel in one area, and others will excel in others.

My daughter is 2 1/2, and has been counting to 30 before her 2nd birthday. She can also say the alphabet, recognizes letters, knows her colors, does 24 piece jigsaw puzzles, and the list goes on and on.

No, I don't push her at all. In fact, she constantly surprises me on what she wants to do and what she can do.

I don't necessarily say she's advanced, but I am proud of her and the best part is she is proud of herself.

She sounds pretty smart to me. My son is two and a half and counts about the same... when he wants too. He can sing the alphabet but doesnt know the letters. I would suggest putting her in a daycare class aimed at preschoolers. The one my son goes to in awesome. Dont worry about all the fools who dont understand what its like to be proud of your child. They are either childless or have the child in the back of the class sniffing glue.

I think it depends on the child . Mine was doing all that at 1 1/2

it completely depends on the child. all children develop differently and excel at different things at different times.

that sounds about right to me. by 2.5 most girls are very verbal. i was in charge of the christmas programs at our preschool this year. almost all of our 2s (18 of them) knew every word to Jingle Bells, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, Amen, I want sing and shout, The Angel Song...

more of them can carry on conversations with you then can't as well.

by move up at the end of May the 2s need to be able to recognize their name by sight, rote count to 10, sing the alphabet, be completely potty trained, identify all the main shapes, and identify the numbers up to 5 by sight...the goals aren't always met but they normally are.

she sounds like she is right on track to me.

take care,
SD
