It's what they prefer?

The environment is much better. It gets so stale and redundant without a new stream of patients every hour.

The adrenaline. Actually helping people with real emergencies. Saving lives.

The quick and easy reality of it is: that working in the Emergency Department is a major part of training for those in school to become physicians
and or specialists of certain types; such as; orthopedic. You will note that there are always doctors "on call" with in an Emergency Room. That is usually delegated by a practice of a "team" of doctors, taking their turn in the rotation for through their particular practice together. These are many scenario's that take place in that, the wild world called: the ER.
I hope this clarifies this you a bit.

As opposed to what? Working in the morgue? That would be where too many people would end up without ER doctors.

well many doctors go straight from school to the ER. Sadly enough its the easiest place to find a job. It also provides them training for multiple situations. Most surgeons had ER duty early on in their careers.

They have become adrenalin junkies from the internships- they are used to all the excitement and there is no better place to be than the ER to "see it all" and be in the "thick of it".... highly stressful, highly traumatic, better be good at quick second decisions and in my opinion, the best place to practice medicine--- after all, look at all the shows that are staged in ER's and could we ever stop watching them?

I'm a nurse, and I really can't answer that question cuz nurses to most of the work anyhow. But nurses can't order medications and testing without the order from the doc. The nurse evaluates you, reports to the doc, then the doc evaluates you and orders meds or tests. Be patient with them, they are both overloaded and understaffed.
