Word is for word processing - format fonts there.
Excel is for spreadsheets - not word processing.
With that said,

There have been times when, in an Excel datafile, I needed to change the case in names, for example, from all caps to title case. This would involve the columns of firstname and lastname.

My file only involved 500 records so I clicked the "table select" button in Excel (to the left of A and above 1). This selects the entire table. I copied the data to a Word table. In Word, I selected the involved columns and used Format, Change Case.

I then copied the edited table back into Excel.

I could have cut only the involved columns, pasted in Word, edited, then cut/pasted back into Excel, but chose to copy the whole file so as not to take a chance on messing anything up.

Regarding space between words, sounds like you are justifying your Word document. This can cause gaps beteern words, especially if you don't use hyphenation.

If you use left-align, the right edge will appear ragged, but spacing will look better.
