Yes it could have worms. Yes it can be harm full not only to the dog but also the worms can be passes to humans, especially small children who put things in their mouths. Your brother needs to take the dog to the vet not only to get wormer, if that is the problem but to make sure that there isn't another problem that could cause the dog to be skinny. Tell your brother that he is irresponsible and doesn't deserve to have an animal. How would he feel with a bunch a worms slithering around in his intestines?

If your vet does not have time to see, then go to another vet. Unless you live waaaaaaaaaaay out in the boondocks, there are 10 other vets within driving distance. The first thing they will check is for intestinal worms. This can be done with a simple fecal sample. You don't even have to take the dog in for that, just take them a stool sample. That will save you some money too. If intestinal worms are not treated they can kill a dog, and it a very painful death. If the problem is not intestinal parasites, then you definetly need to take her to a vet! There are any number of things that could be wrong from cancer to organ malfunction to disease. Until you find out what the problem there is no way to know if it is contagious to you, your family, or other animals. Weight loss is not something that you can just ignore. It is a sign of a definite problem that needs to be handled right away. Good luck!

well, your brother-in-law is going down the road of loosing his dog if he does not take the time to take his sick dog to the vet. There can be many reasons not just worms that can cause weight loss. Some are life threatening. I am glad you are concerned. Shame you can't take the dog for him. Yes, worms can cause the dog's death if left untreated. A long and suffering way to go. You can always report him to the local authorities and he will have to take care of her. He is actually neglecting his dog and that is a form of abuse. If you don't take care of it - you should not have it. That poor dog did not ask to have a slacker as an owner. I bet the breeder would want their dog back if they knew her condition. You do not have to give your name. A neighbor could have reported the dog and not you - catch my drift. I had to do that once to an in-law. Their dog was left in a room in their basement standing in about 6 inches of it's own waste with fleas so thick on it the dog was only skin and bones - no fur. Rats were crawling around eating the poor things food. All the dog could do was stand because if it laid down it was laying in it's own poo. I saw this after opening the door looking for the dog I knew they had to saw hello. I cried so hard for that poor creature. He was such a sweet old dog. I do not care that the owners were upset and I do not care if they knew it was me that called. I only cared that the dog was taken care of. No animal deserves to be neglected or mistreated. They are dependendant on us to care for them. They give us unconditonal love in return. No questions asked. Sorry to go on so, but it drives me crazy. Same for old folks and kids. Breaks my heart. Take care and do what you think is best.

Well if your brother-in-law doesn't have the time to take this dog to the vet maybe he should find someone that does and get rid of the dog. Why keep a dog and just stand back and let it die. This dog probably does have worms and they will kill him.Tell him he can be charged with animal cruelty and neglect. Maybe he'll have some spare time when they put his @ss in jail.!!!!The dog will DIE!!!!!!Since the dog can't speak for himself and seek medical care he needs someone to do it for him!!!! Someone needs to get this dog to the vet ASAP.Find this poor dog a new home or turn it over to the ASPCA or Rottweiler Rescue group!!!!Again, another worthless excuse of a dog owner!!!!!!

Sounds like your brother in law has no business with a dog. Yes, the dog needs veterinary care and yes, if it goes untreated it can be harmful. It depends on what the dog has but *usually* worms are only harmful to the dog.
Maybe you should get your brother in law to rehome the dog. Reminds me of the cases on Animal Precinct on Animal Planet. Why do some people have dogs? So sad. So sad.

it could be worms and some parasites that dogs get can be very dangerous to humans if transmitted. could be not only intestinal parasites but heartworms. this is not transmitted to humans, but does cause fatal damage in the dog if not treated. could be liver or kidney damage, etc etc the list could go on and on. no matter this dog needs to be seen by a vet. if it is possible take the dog away from your brother, or tell him to find the time or you're going to call animal control. this sounds like cruel treatment that is criminally punishable.

you cant MAKE anyone go to the vet, but if you care that deeply for the dog, you can offer to take the dog to the vet and pay some of the bill if not all.
You could also turn him in for animal cruelty. Neglect!! If the dog is sick, then she should have the same right to medical care as anything or anyone else!
They dont know if the dog is in pain!!!!

This dog is emaciated if you can see it's ribs. I agree with the other postings... This dog needs to see the veterinarian as soon as possible. Let the vet determine what could be causing the problems. If you can't afford to take the dog to the vet, take the dog to the pound or give him to someone who can care for him appropriately. Do it for the dog's sake.
Anyone who says they don't have time, when there is a clear & present problem doesn't deserve to have a pet they can't take care of! Shame on him!

He needs to find her a new home if he doesn't have time.
Whip worms will cause a dog to loose weight. It must be diagnosed by the vet. A round of meds and problem solved.
Also ask about the type of food he is feeding. A better quality dog food will help also.

It sounds like the dog has worms. Yes it is dangerous to humans as well as dogs if not treated. If he refuses to take her to the vet then you can call animal contorl. If he doesn't care any more about his pet that this, then maybe you should any way. Good luck with everything I hope the dog gets checked very soon
