All projectors have bulbs with finite life, usually 3000 to 5000 operating hours. They can be replaced easily (by the user), but cost about $120 to $300. You can inquire as to bulb life and replacement cost before you buy a set. The specified lifetime is longer than the useful life since the bulbs dim slowly; when you decide to replace it depends on how bright you need the picture to be.

No it's not true, they're good for much longer than that, but after 3 years they won't be as bright as they once were. Most people can't even notice the difference.

No, DLP had some problems with life early on but they were fixed.
