I personally don't like taking pictures of people. I'd much rather take pictures or inanimate objects. But if you want to take pictures of people, make sure the lighting is good and your shutter speed is appropriate for the thing the person is doing. For example, if someone is running, try setting it to the thing that makes it take like 6 pics a second or something like that. Experimenting is the best thing you can to. I love to try new things with my digital camera. I've had my camera about 3 years and still discover new ways to use the different settings.

Good lighting. Digital cameras like more light than film cameras. And wait for the focus! Take your time and let the camera catch up with you. And yes, take plenty, You can always delete what you don't like but it takes a ton of shots to get a good one or two.
And consider a tripod if you are serious.

Try to take them side on and in soft lighting, this makes the subjects look better. and if you want a really good phot of people then plan ahead.

practice makes perfect. if you can't find books or get help try taking pictures of people with varying degrees and angles of light. that will give you the experience you need to experiment and later take better shots.

Just point and shoot, not every picture is going to be perfect, the really good ones just happen when you aren't even trying.
