Gay marriage has a lot of ridiculous comparison. Bestiality is my favorite, simply because you can always respond with, "WHAT IS IT with Republicans and bestiality?"
No, you have to be EVEN SMARTER to understand WHY gay marriage will lead to monkeys marring lesbian squirrels. It's kind of like how the American/Imperial system of measurement is "smarter" than metric. Anyone can understand metric, but you have to put a lot of mental energy into understanding Imperial.
Actually I think that such absurd comparisons are a sign of how desperate the anti-marriage-equality crowd really is. It's not a sign of a lack of intelligence, but a profound brainwashing.

I agree with you. Although I disagree with homosexuality, I must accept the very fact that we have people with different lifestyles then our own. Statistics prove that homosexual parents are more loving and caring than heterosexual parents to their children. Religion and other factors should stay away from the consideration of lawmakers. Instead, lawmakers need to look at the common good of the masses. As aforementioned I disagree with homosexuality, but do support their marriage and civil union. Some of my good friends are homosexuals, and I treat them like I do everyone else with the utmost respect. They entitled to the same rights as everyone else, and should not be abridged based on sexual orientation. People must realize that we all are made different, and their beauty in appreciating diversity.
On a lighter side, I must confess that ignorance and hatred (which goes hand in hand) is required to compare gay marriage with marrying a talking donkey. People hate what they don't know or understand. I would not say the woman is stupid but misguarded in her beliefs. After all, society is raised that homosexuality is a sin and heterosexuality is the way to go. Don't get mad at this woman, just pity her. If you get mad and degrade this woman, you are stooping to her level. When people do that, we will not get anywhere.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my point of view. :-)

I agree with your point that it is wrong to compare gay marriage to child abuse.
But I think it important to acknowledge that people on the other side of this issue are intelligent. It is possible to be intelligent and wrong, even dreadfully wrong.
I would urge those of us who believe in rights for homosexuals to state our position firmly and fight the good fight here. But let us do so without accusing the other side (even implicitly) of stupidity. Doing so doesn't benefit our side or convince them to change their minds. We should treat them with the same respect we wish they would give to us.

What is your definition of marriage? Is it a man and a woman? Is it two consenting adults? Polygamy is against the law. A man may not have multiple wives and a woman may not have multiple husbands.....however, nothing in the law goes to domestic partnerships. There can be multiple partners in a relationship. So the idea of marrying a donkey is not that far off base. I guarantee you that there is a single family unit consisting of multiple partners that call themselves a family somewhere (I would guess in California).
Is your domestic partnerships going to be available to heterosexual couples to be used as an alternative to marriage? The law has to apply equally to everyone. If two guys can have a recognized partnership then a man and a woman have that same right. That is the problem, once the laws are changed the floodgates are opened. In short order, anything will go.

Amazingly enough, I've heard worse.
My favorite take on it, really ... is when the homophobics scream that granted homosexuals the right to marriage would destroy the institution of marriage.
Excuse me? Britney Spears' 48 hour wedding didn't already do that? Or how about the reality tv series, How To Marry a Millionare?
They treat marriage like a joke, take advantage of it at every turn and treat it like nothing ... but when it's important enough to someone else to fight for, they grab ahold and yell "mine mine mine". Reminds me of a bunch of temper tantrum throwing 2 year olds.
To echo the poster, keep your religion out of our laws.

If you can find me a talking donkey, I'd at least date him. If he's well read, then the conversation could be worth the oats & hay. ;-)
Seriously, the issues of animal sex or child abuse are SO far afield from the issue of two adults who love one another (and simply want the protections and responsibilities of marriage) that it's hard to see how people can equate them.
However, having lived with this issue for 32 years, then I can absolutely believe people say this. I've heard worse. People applying for a marriage license so they could marry their dog. Gay couple restricted from being foster parents or adoptive parents (still tru in Florida). I myself had to pay a $40,000 inheritance tax to the state of NH because when my partner died, I "inherited" his half of my home. (At the time, NH taxed entire estates. Eighteen months later, they rescinded the tax.)

I can believe it. I have been there, done that. I, like those people, were taught that homosexuality is a terrible evil, so I sorta know where they are coming from. I don't really agree with it at all anymore, and yes, it does sound very unintelligent looking at it from my worldview now. Yet, trying to change religious zealotry is futile. My best advice to you is roll your eyes, thank God you are more intelligent, present your viewpoints when appopriate, and don't worry about what everyone else thinks. :)

Well since the people you are talking about like to use similes here's one for them to chew on - people are like sheep - they blindly follow and blindly accept whatever is forced down their throats.
They may have the potential to be intelligent free thinking people - they just allow themselves to be sheep. They believe what their church tells them and take no time to actually think for themselves. Very sad that people still today, think we have made progress from 100 years ago and all we have done is allow the "few" to herd the many into believing a bunch of nonsense.

Perhaps the people posting these questions are more open minded than they seem, but only post these questions to expose others' opinions. Maybe sort of a Borat approach to things. Or they just do for kicks! Or they are really prejudiced... which would really be sad.

On a daily basis I'm shocked by the sheer willful ignorance displayed in a lot of the R&S answers. Ignorance is one thing...but choosing to remain so is just unacceptable...and kind of sad. Some of the things people post on here leave me with my mouth hanging open.
Don't get me wrong, it's fine to have faith in something, admirable even...but that doesn't give you an exemption from using your brain. But a lot of people on here seem to think it does.
