The need to feel accepted is a primal human emotion that religion takes advantage of.

Religions are man-made. They can NOT fill any void humans may have. They will only confuse you if the Holy Spirit sent by God is not there to guide you, with knowledge and wisdom. What people are craving is a relationship with God, but they look to religion instead of God for the answers.

No I do not need religion to fulfill my life. I need Jesus to save my soul and give me a purpose for living. Religion is a bunch of man made rules to be followed. Christianity is a personal relationship with a personal God.

I was raised Southern Baptist, but I feel much better now. I'd say most Christians need something to believe in so they can function in everyday life. I don't need a crutch to survive. I'm not a sheep, unlike Christians. I can think for myself without being told what to think. Yes, Christians are sheep being led. Why else would preachers call them their "flock"?

I think religion is popular in the US because we're a nation of immigrants. Detached from our extended families and communities, a church forms sort of a pseudo-family and community. In Europe, where people have deeper roots, I think they have a lesser need for religion.

Good question sadly no clear answer.
I think its obvious many people need a spiritual life of some sort, that is why religion is so prevalent. Why? Where we got it? Do other species have it? No idea.

Now not all of them need it. Some of them(kids) are forced into it. It gives them an answer to the question "Why?". It's a big void that needs to be filled for those who can't stand on their own 2 feet.

It's not religion that fulfills us it's our relationship with our God. We are the body of Christ. We have a fellowship of believers and yes, we do care for one another and take on one an others burdens.

JUST the fact that spirituality fills your life is proof that a God exists and that humans have a spiritual need.
Without God we have spiritual hunger. Proof that God exists and Evolution is a big lie.

Do you need food, water and air to live?
Do you need knowledge and awareness for the functioning of you brain? Of course you need all these things for your physical existence, but best of all you need spirituality and God to fill your soul.
