I would work (i.e. not just talk) very hard to show everybody else in the office that you are not like what your boss pictured you to be, especially people in higher positions than your direct boss because they would the ones who ultimately are able to influence your boss and his/her behaviors towards you an things he/she would say about you to others.

I've had one boss who alleged I drove home drunk from a work party a few years ago in front of a few other work colleagues and perhaps others I don't know, but due to my pre-existing reputation for hard work, punctuality, quality etc, nothing came of it.
Needless to say, I got promoted from his team 2.5 years ago and shortly after, he asked me on two occasions whether I would work for him again....
Anyway, don't let people with tall poppy syndrome cut you down. They are almost always just jealous and if you are a hard worker and generally good employee, potential employers will see through your existing boss' trash talk or lack of recognition for you.

There's not too much you can do to restore your reputation, but prove him/her wrong. If it was slander, harrassment, or anything else that is clearly illegal and it can be proven that your boss did it, then you should talk to the HR director at your place of business. If the HR dirctor won't adress the issue then go to the HR director at your corporate offices. ALWAYS follow the chain of command, or else you problem probably won't get addressed.

If it's not true, and if he has been saying things about you to other people? You should really look up SLANDER, which means if a person says something about you that is not true and you can prove it has impacted your life you have grounds for a lawsuit.... Then again somehow, everyone has a boss from hell at one point in their life, don't know why? I suppose it's human nature to take it upon themselves and abuse their authority.

I would talk to someone above them. If that doesn't help or causes problems you should really look into employment laws.

Forgive him or her in your mind, but hand your sour feelings over to God and let him decide how that person should pay, works everytime and you can only hope that they remember what they did to you when they go through their own trouble.
Good Luck!
