No long term good comes from deforestation. Only short term profit. This is a major global problem. Good news is some counties are working on their forests and have been improving and expanding the area under forest. In poor nations it is much harder as people will survive the best way they can. And the rich nations keep buying their timber.

Terrestrial plants only contribute a small amount to controlling carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The plankton in the seas do the vast majority of that and always have.

Deforestation is destroying natural habitat and should be stopped for that reason, if no other. The Sahara desert is a good example of what can happen if deforestation is allowed to continue. That was once a great forest, thousands of years ago. But, forests in many parts of the world are actually expanding. In the US for example, for every tree cut down 3-5 are planted. And old groves are left alone. I am not using that fact to minimize the effects or the terrible crime of destroying an entire habitat but I am trying to deal with it realistically.

The real problem and the source of deforestation is that the peoples of those areas need some form of income if they are to survive. The obvious solution would be to provide another means of earning money.

Thats it-trees ,plants, grasses but with all the deforestation there will not be enough trees to produce conditions for sufficient rain-more dying of green life. Also all the deforestation will also release into the air viruses and bad stuff up to now contained-this is also true ESP of the Ice Melting in the Artic Region-Viruses etc trapped in the ice for EONS will be released when it melts-Scary? You Bet for there are many changes with many unpleasant that Will Occur for already beginning. Air Quality? If you find a bargain on /Air /Oxygen Mask get it-get several and PRAY!

As far as CO2 production is concerned, algae are more important than trees (simply because there are so much of it), which does not mean that plants and forest are not important.
