when we lay down, our body signals us that it wants to take a rest. so naturally, all the muscles and moving organs in our body either slow down or stop working. our heart for example, slows down in it beats per second, and etc. for each organ. our eyelids, in that case, automatically close shut, as the brain signals that the rest of the body is now in 'slow mode'. so if we were to keep our eyelids open, there would be some sort of tension created from the muscle that is still working, in some way, and so we MIGHT sleep but we wont rest.

so its better to close your eyes when you sleep to rest and sleep and to help your body maintain the chemical understanding of all the muscles slowing down..!

Some people can sleep with their eyes open but most people need to shut out the light and to protect their eyes in case they roll around in their sleep.

Our body relaxes when we go to sleep. It would be difficult to will our eyes to remain open while in that state. So it is not that we need to close our eyes, we just have no choice.
