In the US and many other countries a spoon and fork is used, as has already been said. However, when you are in Italy, don't use a spoon, but use a fork only. If you're using a spoon, they immediately will know you're a foreigner, Italians don't do that!
I guess you can use just a fork when eating at an Italian restaurant in other countries too, if the restaurant is run by Italians and you want to appear well-traveled :-)

You don’t have to use the spoon. The spoon is there to help you wind the pasta onto your fork. Twirl the pasta with a fork either by rolling it around in the spoon or just use the fork alone, keeping the fork tip in contact with the plate.
You wouldn’t think that there would be a controversy about how to eat spaghetti. But, some are of the opinion that a spoon should not used and using a spoon is frowned upon in Italy. Some also feel that cutting spaghetti into small bite-sized pieces is not proper. However, it should be fine to cut the strands to shorten slightly before twirling.
Slurping pasta is the only method that is never proper.

As they say above ... Funniest date I ever had began with a lot of walking around sightseeing - he's wearing a white sweatshirt. Originally.
We then go into an Italian restaurant - he has the spaghetti bol. Being so hungry, he twirls his fork so fast while eating that the sweatshirt is covered in decorative spirals of red sauce. Didn't know whether to duck, call an ambulance or ask for an umbrella!

I like to twirl my spaghetti on my fork. However just because i like that doesn't mean its the proper way. Some people cut it, some people slurp it, and some people twirl it.
Maybe spaghetti is one of those things that there is really no right or wrong way to eat. Just like Reeses penutbutter cups. Maybe you can eat it the way you think is write.
peace out!

With a fork and a spaghetti spoon. You pick up some pasta and swirl it in the spoon to wrap it around the fork.

twirl a few strands of the spagetti with your fork.
with the spoon to hold the "loose" ends.
with fork, lift spagetti into your mouth.
you need not have to slurp the ends down or make a mess with all the tomato sause over your blouse/shirt and face.

I think it's twirling the spaghetti onto your fork, holding the fork against a spoon................But I say, as long as you can eat it without slopping it all over, who cares! LOL!

Rolling the noodles on a fork with a spoon holding them on the fork until completely rolled. I myself cut the noodles into smaller pieces with my fork so it is not so sloppy.
