Julie, If it was that easy I would have done that. Am trying to check out a man that is dating a daughter of mine. Something just doesn't seem quite right.

The way we do it here in Canada is there is a criminal records check that can be done at any local municipal police services or provincial police (aka OPP in Ontario). All the forms I've ever seen require the person to fill out the form and bring in two pieces of ID into the station.
Other than getting them to do that, the only real way to know would be to hire a private investigator.

The only ways I know are to find a friend who knows a friend that is in law enforcement OR hire a private investigator.
