Hi
I am a hairdresser and I will give the most honest answer I can. Doing you own hair at home is not all that bad, if you know what you are doing. Some of the pros of going to a Salon are
1) We can control the level of peroxide used. The boxes sold at the drug store if you look on the side will show results on different shades of darkness or lightness. You may not need a high level of lift.... using the proper level....means less damage.
2) It is hard to do the back on your own head
3) You should never over lap colour this could lead to damage and uneven colour down the hair shaft.
4) Depending on your colour right now, depends on what you are going to use to get desired shade. Using light brown may not get you light brown, there is a colour wheel to take into consideration.
5) Going darker from a light blonde requires a lot of knowledge about the colour wheel. This is were fillers come in.
6) Going blonde? This can be harder then one thinks. Depending on your natural level you may need to lift more then once and will need to use a toner to achieve a nice shade.
7) Everyone needs to understand that once you have artificial colour on your hair all the shades on the side of those boxes are tossed out the window...all those colour swatches are for natural hair. I have been doing hair for 10 years and can tell you very few Women have virgin hair.
If you have someone who can help you apply the colour and knows how to not overlap it. I would say go for it just is careful. All those brassy blondes, green blondes, browns that look black, reds that only took on the roots are probably (hopefully) were done at home.
Colour doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Please remember that just because you are paying $$$ for hair services...does not mean the stylist is that much better then someone up the street doing it for $$ or $. We pretty much all started at the same few schools and have had the same training. Good Luck !!!!!J

Better to have a hairdresser do it for they 1-can judge or should inform you whether or not your hair is in condition to take color poor hair quality unhealthy, will if add color make hair dry and can even damage the hair further-Frizz Galore.2. Hairdresser should be qualified to tell what color will suit you the best determined by your skin tone, eye color and orig hair color 3. A hairdresser specifically trained in Coloring Hair can add color to your hair and add variations in color that will look totally natural WHILE Most of the store bought haircolors tend to have 1color and have no variations in the color tone which is not how natural haircolor looks for natural hair has color variations because of exposure to the sun and so on. Also if done by professional colorist and something does go wrong or color does not look as expected then they will correcct the problem right then and there.and have the know how of what to do

I think this answer all depends on the type of hair you have. From personal experience, I used to dye my hair shades of reddish brown (I'm a natural brunette) for various varieties of boxed hair dyes over the years. What ended up happening was the metallic pigments from the dye began to build up leaving the underside of my hair almost black. At that point I never could get my hair to lighten in color and had to get the color professionally lifted at the salon with some stinky sulfur concoction.
I think the moral of the story depends on the shade your using as well. If you want to drastically change your hair color (like from being a brunette to a blonde or becoming a red head) then you should get it professionally done. The hair stylists dyes are a lot more gentle on the hair, plus they will condition your hair for added strength. However if you want to just change your hair more subtle it is perfectly safe to use boxed dyes.

I have been dyeing my hair from last 10 years. First I went to a hair dresser but I found that it is more easy to self dye than going to a hairdresser because you do it more easily. Now a days you are getting hair dyes that you just apply on your hair like oil and wash your hands and wash your head after one hour and your hair gets dyed black. You do not require any gloves and the dye that has got smeared on your places where there is no hair all you have to do is to wipe it with a cloth and since the dye takes 20 minutes to color there is no danger of staining your self.

it absolutely makes all the difference in the world. for one thing-the dyes in the box from a grocery store are sooo harsh. they formulate them with such a high volume of peroxide-that most people don't require. They are also metallic based dyes that can react crazy with any other chemical that is put in the hair-even another color down the road. the end result is unpredictable because it is not specifically formulated for you. Professional lines that we use in the salon give us unlimited possibilities, and a room full of color that we can mix and match to get the result you are looking for. simply selecting a color swatch doesn't mean it will come out that way on your hair, we may have to play around with the tonal base so it will not turn out different on your head-ex. my hair tends to get a reddish or warm tone to it if you just put a straight natural base color on it....I would compensate by using something in the cool family-like and ash or violet based color so it does not do this. and like I said-we select the correct volume of peroxide for you too, so it's not harsh on your hair-we aim for pretty color and healthy hair. but I won't ramble too much, I hope I gave you key points to y it's so important to trust your permanent accessory to a professional : )..if you live in fl....

A hairdresser can make a multitude of shades that the store brand doesn't offer.
If it is 1-2 shades lighter/darker, I would use the box stuff. But for a drastic change, go to a hairdresser.
For highlights/undertones, let the hairdresser do that, too. She can make it much more uniform than a box can.

a]they know what theyre doing
b] even though a friend thinks she might, theres a 75/25 chance shes going to mess it up.
It may cost you a bit more, but id rather be safe than sorry!

Professional hair dyeing is less damaging to your hair they can also come really close to the hair color you want. it is also easier when you want your roots colored. i dye my own hair it is brittle and frizzy this is something that could be avoided from a salon. if it does happen then they can probably fix it.
