Yes he did the large water lilies were painted on wood panels.

I am pretty sure he didn't. When he was painting manufacturers had started making art materials.. Canvas were primed ready with different colours to choose from . Often the impressionists used this colour as part of the painting.meaning they didn't paint on some of the canvas. Now we can only buy white canvases which, if I am buying ready made ones I will always put a layer of flatish colour and leave to dry and this colour influences the whole picture unless the paint is very thick.
