I looked this up on google and spent a bit of time hunting through a bunch of unrelated stuff. Hope I found the answer.
The woman was condemned to death by hanging but was offered an aquittal if she could make the judges unable to figure out a riddle.
She gave the riddle that you wrote. The judges were unable to figure it out and she was allowed to go free.
Her answer was:
Her dog was named "Love"
She killed the dog and made a cushion for her chair to sit in out of Love's fur. She also made shoes for her feet in which to stand. She made gloves for her right hand. And the rest of the body was placed in yonder tree.
Am I right?

A woman had a dog, called 'Love'. She had killed it, and with its skin had made socks for her shoes - on these she stood; gloves for her hands - and these she held; a seat for her chair - on that she sat; she looked at her gloves and she saw Love; but Love saw her no more.
There are some riddles that are especially unique to a single individual, and no other person can figure out.

The "Love I hold in my right hand" part makes me think of the Statue of Liberty, but I've no idea what that would do with the "You can hang me" part.
