Trust me, if you owed federal or state back taxes, you would surely know about it. On the federal side, the IRS would have been sending you notices regarding a balance due on a previous tax year or a notice of intent to levy. I'm sure the same would apply from the taxing agency within your state. Call the IRS general assistance line at 1-800-829-1040 and ask the CSR to review your account to see if there are any balances owed for any previous tax years. That information would be readily available to them and it would only take a few seconds to pull up. Do the same for your state department of revenue.

You can talk to a tax attorney and reveal your concerns. The attorney will not divulge incriminating information. The attorney can find out if there are taxes in arrears, and advise you how to proceed if you need to get your taxes current.

But you need an attorney and the attorney-client privilege since you seemed concerned about possible legal issues.
