I bought a bag of onions, and I had to get away from my apartment for winter break. Now I am trying to cook, and I found some of my onions growing something at the top...I assume its a root. It kinda looks like grass/green onion. Is it still good? How long can you leave an onion out, uncut, until it is unsafe to eat?

That's not the root, that's the sprout. The onion is still fine to eat, although you'll probably want to cut away the sprouted part. Just like garlic, it can have an off flavor once it's gone to producing chlorophyll.

Onions can last quite a while, depending on how you store them. A cool, dry place is best, without a lot of light exposure. You'll know if an onion has started to go bad, as it will soften, turn a brownish-yellow in spreading spots, and take on a foul odor.

It's not a root, it's a sprout. If you were to plant that onion, the sprout would continue to grow.

Onions are a biannual plant, meaning that they take two growing seasons to fully mature and bear seed. We generally harvest them for cooking after the first year, as the portion that we eat, the bulb, would be food for the still growing plant.

As long as the onion itself isn't rotting, you can eat it.

I think of Onions come from many places. only like something. Spain, Mexico, usa, and so on i can not think of an onion no longer turning out to be in a definite section, except we ought to communicate approximately chilly climates, everywhere that has a heat climate.
