The weblink below is taken from The Age newspaper in Melbourne, just to give you some ideas on crime rates in Melbourne, Australia.

Good luck.

I was in New Zealand (South Island, Queenstown) over the holidays and was told that they have a very low crime rate. In fact, the Kiwi (what New Zealander's call themselves) I spoke with has no locks on her home and left for a three week trip to the US and left her house unlocked. She said that most crime is of the partying type, drunk-driving, etc. New Zealand police are generally not even armed. I felt very same the whole time I was there. The North island may have more crime, but there is a much larger population. My cab driver in Auckland also said the crime is generally of the petty type.

The most comprehensive database to check that is www.nationmaster.com
In New Zealand, the crime rate gets lower with the size of the cities. Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington seem to be in the news a lot, while Nelson, Dunedin, and Blenheim never seem to be.
When you read the statistics, in which Australia and New Zealand fare a lot worse than any European nation (contrary to what previous answerers said), keep in mind also that NZ crime recording is higher than average.
My personal impression is that you're about as safe in NZ as you would be in Wales, Scotland, or Northern France. So, quite safe, but they ain't no angels here, either.

The crime rate is very low compaired to other places around the world. Australia has higher crime rate than NZ. Larger cities have high crime rate. South Island of NZ is safer than the North but you're not safe where ever you are. A german exchange student was grabbed from the street and throwen into a car by a man in Dunedin (NZ 6th largest town). But you are relativly safe.

Crime is Australia is low by world standards and despite the hysteria from the media it is falling. It is far lower than in the USA. Despite similar hysteria road death rates and drink driving rates are low by world standards and are falling. Tahini mentions an attack on a tourist in NZ. This sort of thing has happened in Aust. too but it is sporadic. Some random loony perpetrator. Take reasonable precautions as you might anywhere and you are safe here.

Since I' migrating to Australia, I recently checked the murder rate. There are about 300 homicides per year in all of Australia, which has a population of 20 million. In Venezuela, where I'm from, there were over 13.000 murders in 2006, for a population of 24 million. On New Year weekend, there were 110 homicides in Caracas alone. You can imagine why I'm leaving.

It depends....you can´t compare Sidney, Melbourne, Auckland with small villages. But in general, very very low.
