We live in OH (Cuyahoga County) & I need to know if this is true. My oldest will be 13 soon & doesn't want to go see Dad any more. They are not being mistreated but they are being ignored. They love their Dad but are very hurt that he doesn't talk or do enough with them. What can I do?

Me and my husband are in this situation right now.His daughter has not been in our house since memorial day if 2006.She 13 years old and has chose not to have anything to do with him at all. When we got a lawyer he stated that it was true that once a child reaches the age of 13 he/she dosen't have to ever see the parent. When we take his son to his moms, she will not even look at him.If your child isn't being mistreated, then please encourage your child to see his or her dad. My husband is dieing inside due to his daughter not wanting him. I wouldn't wish that on no parent, unless something bad was happening to this child. Talk with your ex, the three of you set down and talk about what this child is feeling, see if dad can fix this, don't give up til you try.

so your child would rather have no relationship w/Dad than the less than ideal one that is there? Have you encouraged your child to talk to the Dad and try to improve the relationship. Seems like if he is at least going through the motions to see the kids, he might just need a wake up call, he may have no clue how to better the relationship, he may not even be aware that there is a problem.

some states it is 15 but my son made that decision in Idaho. Yes, they can do that but have to have a good reason and they have to actually talk to the judge but sounds like there needs to be a talk with the dad and tell him these feelings are going on and you don't persuade it one way or the other...it could backfire!!!

My understanding is that when a husband and a wife divorce that tier children are permanently wards of the court, the court then decides who shall have custody, the husband or wife. Therefore in order to implement your son's wishes, as well as yours, it is necessary to go before the court to have this matter decided. Please keep in mind out important it is for a boy to have a male role model in his life, whether we agree with that male role model or not.

Custody and visitation laws vary from state to state, you would have to find out from your lawyer.
