If so, how soon will I see an improvement? (I have a little bit of spacing between my teeth...they are not major gaps.)

No, that's what braces are for. A retainer simply maintains the space once the actual braces are off and the Orthodontist feels that your dentition is set to the proper alignment.

Sorry but your orthodontist needs to answer this one. Can be done with a simple phone call.

HOW MUCH THEY WILL MOVE TEETH DEPENDS ON THEIR DESIGN.

i wear them and they do but takes time and only if you use them as told by your dentist
