In my opinion, singing WELL is a talent or a gift from God. Everyone can sing, even if it isn't that great.
A lot of people who can't sing just need a lot of ear training to understand how to hear music, what they are hearing, and how to replicate it.
I am a professional musician (instrumental) who can sing fairly well, but I would never be a professional singer. I'll put it this way, my mom can carry a tune in a bucket, but her bucket has a hole in it. Everyone else: totally tone deaf. Taking that into consideration, I believe that genetics plays only a small role in it.
My advice to you: take voice lessons from a qualified (and patient) teacher who will teach you music theory and ear training as well, and see what happens. You may never sing professionally, but at least you will please yourself!

I personally think everyone can sing, with the right teaching. Only a few people are tone-deaf to the point of being beyond hope. I personally went from making my dog flee the room every time I turned on the karaoke machine to actually receiving a full vocal scholarship to college and holding down a job singing opera in a restaurant, but it took 5 years of training with a patient, supportive teacher, and LOTS of hours of practice.
That's just my personal experience, but after 15 years of singing and being around other singers, plus a few years of teaching, I've never met anyone who was truly without any singing ability whatsoever. Too many people write themselves off before they even try.

Some people are just born with beautiful voices. It's kinda like sports. Some people are star players, others can't do a thing even if they practice 24-7.
I forget who said this, but here: "Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best"
We can't do everything, just do what you're able to do well.

Ive wondered about that too. I think singing is just a talent that your born with. Having the talent to move your voice to match different pitches (you have to have a good ear for that) and being able to do it with power (which you need strong vocal chords for) and at the same time doing it beautifully is something your born with. Some people just dont have that, just like some people cant curl up their tongue or cant whistle. its genetics too.

It's kind of the same thing as drawing or sculpting - a fine art. It has a lot to do with your upbringing, and possibly with your parents. If your parents aren't good at it, or don't think it's important, then chances are you aren't a good singer. But if they play a lot of music with singing in it when you were little, then you have the makings of a singer. It doesn't guarantee that you'll be a superstar, but I know that my parents used to play a lot of music when I was little, and now I'm a pianist.

For one thing you need to start out with a fairly decent voice. This doesn't mean that it has to be great mind you, just decent. Then, a lot of work involved in training it. It doesn't happen overnight and some have to work harder than others. It all depends on the voice and how determined you are.

Music, the ear for and the voice for is heriditary.
It sometimes skips a generation as in my family.
I am a retired professional musician. My grand parents were professional musicians as well but my parents were just about tone deaf.

I think it might have to do with genetics, because my mom can sing, and my grandma could too. My mom's sister can't, and neither can mine, though, so maybe I'm wrong.

I can't sing either and its not for lack of trying. My Nana sounds positively hilarious and she knows it and we all laugh about it. (And she loves to sing and make up her own songs) I don't think we can really become awesome singers if we weren't born that way.
