The best thing I have found is ebay. You can start off with your own stuff you no longer want or need. Especially with kids I've made a good profit by selling my kids' too small clothes in lots as they grow out of them.
I have found this is the most forgiving at home job. With 4 kids sometimes it's hard to make a schedule for something like parties and at home telemarketing.
Another great thing about it is you don't need any money up front. After you get going with your own things you can save up and start selling things from overstocks from stores. I also hit the season end clearance sales and sell those things the next year (baby and maternity clothes especially). Yard sales are also a great place to find things that are worth more on ebay.
This really is the safest easiest way to go.....and I've tried many.

I did Ebay (and still do) for years. It's somewhat of a pain taking 3 little ones to the post office, etc.
I need to share about my new business... I started my Pampered Chef business last year - November and it's awesome! I'm an Independent Consultant. I had a show to get started and got my kit for $50. I've averaged $400+ a month by doing only TWO home shows (actually at someones house) + two catalog shows a month! You earn about $100 a show - plus LOTS of Free product. For November & December I earned over $1400 CASH - it paid for Christmas and then some! Then I took most of Dec. off! Love it!!
If you would like to visit my website to learn more see
www.pamperedchef.biz/joannesmith
and visit the "Join my Team" to read more about the company.
You can always email me for more information. It's a blast and my hubby loves the extra income for trips, fun things, etc!
I'm hooked after it paying for our entire Christmas this year!
Good Luck!

I personally would have to say look into doing a direct sales business. I joined Sensaria Natural Bodycare almost a year ago and have loved every minute of it. I do what we call a Spa Experience; teaching women nurturing rituals about taking care of themselves. Facials, foot soaks, and aromatherapies...Totally relaxing and due to the fact that it's a newer company the clientele is endless because everyone is looking for something new to do and they're tired of the same old MaryKay and Avon parties. It's totally a personal call though. Look into the company you like the best and do your research on that company and it's competitors. Good luck on your endeavours!
