The Explorer is a good SUV but changing it can be expensive.. you have to change the trucks computer system along with the transmission because the computer controls shifting ect.. It would cost less to sell the Explorer and buy another one like it that is automatic than to try to change it.. You also can run into smog certification problems if you live in a state that is strict like it is here in California...

Used to be real easy before 1985. Now, electronic engine controls make this difficult. You can put in the automatic trans, but it will not shift without reprograming of the engine's PCM. This may require extra wiring harnesses that are not on your vehicle already. You will also have to put in an aftermarket floor shifter but that's the least of your problems.
It's easier to sell it or swap it for an automatic. People have been driving manual trans vehicles for years, and for a free vehicle I bet they would learn real fast.

The best bet is to leave it alone, You are talking about $2500-$3000 dollars to do this, Yes it can be done but not worth it. A stick shift is more reliable than the autos in these trucks.

dude don't do it.
bad idea in the first place getting a standard shifting suv.
tell him to teach his wife for the time being and trade it, i mean, a hyundai is pretty reliable for the time being, trade it.
97?
wow, they must really put manuals in recently too.
if you got a '97 you can trade it for a resonable price.
It's too much time on your hands.
Wow i wish i had an older brother..

we have done a 94 probe gt. its not that hard of a job just more time consuming than any thing. what we did was foud a five speed car, luckly we found on that was a roll over that was the same color and everything, brought it home and swaped everything out.
