I taught a university-level class last spring and after doing an activity in the class, I promised the students I would post an answer key for the activity on the class website, but never posted it. No one asked me for it, but I'm wondering if I should contact the members of the class and give it to them now. I would like to be honest about my promise, but it seems somewhat irrelevant now. What do you think is the best thing I could do?

Years ago I took a class, submitted my paper and got a "C". Apparently I was the only student in the whole class who cared; I asked for my paper back, but the professor lost it, but felt really terrible about it.

I've taught classes myself; I see a wide range of interest, and on a purely personal level, I feel if I could influence the future of just one or two students, it's worth teaching. Maybe I'm just being naive, but that's my motivation for following through with my promises to the class.

It's probably a lot like the "if you took something away from someone who would never notice it missing, is it really stealing?" question. The question obviously weighs heavily on you. It might just feel better to just get it over with and post it, than to have that idea bug keep crawling around inside your head. You have better things to think about.

If it were me I would just plan to keep one on file and if a student ever asks about it, go ahead and send them a copy. Seeing as the class is already over for the semester, it's really not worth the time and effort now. Most college students understand that sometimes, things happen and we get caught up with other things. It's alright, in this case, to not follow through with what you've said as no one is likely to be searching for it.

Having taught a great deal myself if the students really wanted the answer I am sure they would have gotten in touch with you. I am of course assuming that you left a contact number and email with them. I would not bother now as most have probably not given it another thought or they would have been compelled to contact you.

No, water under the bridge, let sleeping dogs lie; whatever.

I would not bother since the semester is over. If they had wanted it, they'd've asked for it.
