You can think what you want, but apathy is a symptom of a much greater problem.

Apathy may one day be considered a condition. You never know with the DSM. Most likely, however, it will not be a generally accepted "condition" because of it's potential negative social implications. As everyone who keeps track of the DSM knows, social implications is a major factor in determining what goes on the manual.

Apathy is definitely considered and is a major symptom of many other mental illnesses, however. It is one of the precursor and stages between mania episodes in schizophrenia. It is one of the "negative" symptoms (as opposed to "positive" symptoms like delusions). Apathy is also a specific (though less commonly sought for treatment) form of depression. It is also the main characteristic of those with a Schizoid Personality Disorder. The list can go on...

Apathy is more of a symptom of a psychological issue. Apathy is more or less indifference to emotional, social and physical life. Some psychologist say that it is learned helplessness or a depression. But I could go on and on...apathy is more of a symptom
