If the straightening iron doesn't work well with your hair you may have to try another brand , one that gets hotter, also you may want to try and get one with ceramic plates on it. I prefer the Andis multi straightening one. You can get it at Walgreens for around 15 dollars it is well worth it. I have found that it works better than any other one I've tried including the expensive ones. The best way to clean a straightening iron is get the iron really hot and take a wet wash cloth and pull it through the iron.

That smell is grease on your hair burning from the iron. To clean the burnt off it get just a wet rag and wipe it off while the iron is completely cooled. If that does not work try nail polish remover.

when its cold and unplugged and turned off, get a cotton damped with rubbing alcohol, and wipe of all the parts u cna, then with a toothpick get the gunk out of the small places, and then with a ear swab maybe a lil alcohol if u want do the edges, wipe it off and then it should be ok, mine wasnt workin to well and i did that....i always clean it but i went out with the alcohol and it works better!! try it i hope it answers r prob.. good luck!
