The Bible's accuracy and reliability have been proved and verified over and over again by archaeological finds produced by both believing and nonbelieving scholars and scientists. This included verification for numerous customs, places, names, and events mentioned in the Bible.
One among many examples is the fact that for many years the existence of the Hittites (a powerful people who lived during the time of Abraham) was questioned because no archaeological digs had uncovered anything about them. Critics claimed the Hittites were pure myth. But today the critics are silenced. Abundant archaeological evidence for the existence of the Hittites during the time of Abraham has been uncovered.
Bible scholar Donald J. Wiseman notes, "The geography of Bible lands and visible remains of antiquity were gradually recorded until today more than 23,000 sites within this region and dating to Old Testament times, in their broadest sense, have been located." Nelson Glueck, a specialist in ancient literature, did an exhaustive study and concluded: "It can be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a biblical reference." Well-known scholar William F. Albright, following a comprehensive study, wrote: "Discovery after discovery has established the accuracy of innumerable details, and has brought increased recognition of the value of the Bible as a source of History."
There are more than 24,000 partial and complete manuscript copies of the New Testament. These manuscript copies are very ancient and they are available for inspection NOW. there are also some 86,000 quotations from the early church fathers and several thousand lectionaries (church-service books containing Scripture quotations used in the early centuries of Christianity). In fact, there are enough quotations from the early church fathers that even if we did not have a single copy of the Bible, scholars could still reconstruct all but 11 verses of the entire New Testament from material written within 150 to 200 years from the time of Christ. Bottom line: The New Testament has an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting its reliability.

Not all of us read it literally. It must have been divinely "inspired" to have so much wisdom in it. The people were living in the Egyptian culture where the Pharaoh had all the power and everyone else were slaves. The Pharaoh and his entourage were the only ones to have an afterlife.
The God of the Israelites gave them laws which applied to leaders as well as to the shepherds and farmers. Everyone had access to the Israelite God's laws and could see that judges applied the laws equally to all peoples -- Jews and gentiles alike -- as well as leaders and slaves. Slaves were to be treated like family and were to be given their freedom after 7 years with enough resources to live on. Those who committed crimes were judged according to their crimes -- both leaders and slaves. In other words, the Israelite God gave us the very first Democracy.
"Who Wrote the Bible" by Richard Elliott Friedman makes a very interesting read!

So many believe that the Bible is the Truth because it was written by more than a dozen different men over the course of several thousand years, AND is completely consistent (never contradicts itself), AND has been confirmed over and over by archeological evidence, AND has never been contradicted by archeological evidence.
Other religious books (e.g. the book of mormon) were written by one man, are self-contradicting, and are constantly disproved by archeological evidence.
Another "proof" that the Bible is real is that all the "Heros of the Faith" are shown warts and all. They are not made out to be perfect (David and Bathsheeba, Paul's persecution of early christians, Abraham passing Sarah off as his sister not his wife (twice)).
Ultimately the Bible is known to be the true Word of God because of what it says. If you read it, you will be amazed how a book written 2000 - 6000 years ago directly applies to your life today.

People feel the Bible is the truth because, unlike other rational beliefs, they choose this belief based on how it makes them feel.
Personally, I'd like to have information from BOTH 2 millenia ago AND today!

Many different people, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote the books of the Bible. The entire Bible was written in different times and places, over a period of approx. 1000 years, from about 900BC to 100AD
Inspired means that God is the author of the Bible, but it does not mean God dictated the Bible word for word.
God chose certain people who made use of their abilities with the Holy Spirit acting in them and through them. Then they wrote the truth that God wanted us to know for our salvation.

Because they are afraid of dying so they made up a peachy little "afterlife" where you can go fly in the clouds with the angels. Christians have pushed the bible on us for centuries....they've killed billions of non-believers for not converting. Its a way to keep people in line, and keep people from being afraid of dying.....thats about it.
