Humans tend to think that the tail wag is a sign of happiness, it is actually a sign of excitement. You should remember that dogs are pack animals. They will be happy when they know their place in the pack. Humans take dogs into their homes and lives without defining the dogs place for him. This is the biggest reason, in my opinion, for a dog misbehaving. Also from what you have said, you are giving him too much attention. You are asking for trouble. Be a leader to him, and he will be happy.

A dog is happiest when he knows how to please his master and knows his position in the family. The best way to make sure your puppy will be happy with you is to take him to an obedience class where he can learn how to live with people happily. By giving him too many treats, toys and attention without having him actually earn them you may be spoiling him. You want to be happy with him as well, I am sure you don't want him to control you for the next 10-15 years. I am speaking from experience. Teach him basic commands and you will have a very happy best friend. Good luck :)

I know that when my puppy is happy she has a lot of energy and comes to me and cuddles up, she wags her tail, her eyes are large and cute, oh and her ears they have this way of going back when she's excited and going up when she's listening, or going back when she's hurt/sad.
1. Ears (I don't know if your dog has floppy ears but my dog has cropped ears and they go back if she's happy up and up if she's happy).
2. Her tail was (her tail is docked but the little stub goes back and forth and it's cute).
3. She licks/kisses me a lot
4. She's always in this excited mood. Like when I come home from an errands she runs up to me and jumps all over me and follows me.
I just also naturally knows she's happy but how much we're clingy. Good Luck.

If he wags his tail a lot, and like to be near you. Also, if he's treated well, he will not be afraid or nervous around you.

It is easy if you think of how you know when your pup is unhappy. The pup will howl and cry when it is unhappy. On the other hand if the pup is not howling or crying and enthusiastically participates with you when you want it to....then it is happy.
