do the band, it is a less invasive procedure.

The name “LAP-BAND” comes from the surgical technique used, laparoscopic, and the name of the implanted medical device, gastric band. The LAP-BAND® System is a silicone ring designed to be placed around the upper part of the stomach and filled with saline on its inner surface. This creates a new, smaller stomach pouch that can hold only a small amount of food, so the food storage area in the stomach is reduced. The band also controls the stoma (stomach outlet) between the new upper pouch and the lower part of the stomach. When the stomach is smaller, you feel full faster, while the food moves more slowly between your upper and lower stomach as it is digested. As a result, you eat lessand lose weight.

The Minimally Invasive Procedure
During the procedure, surgeons usually use laparoscopic techniques (making tiny incisions rather than a large incision and inserting long-shafted instruments through “ports”), to wrap the LAP-BAND® System around the patient’s stomach. A narrow camera is passed through a port so the surgeon can view the operative site on a nearby video monitor. Like a wristwatch, the band is fastened around the upper stomach to create the new stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. The band is then locked securely in a ring around the stomach.

Since there is no stomach cutting, stapling, or gastrointestinal re-routinginvolved in the LAP-BAND® System procedure, it is considered the safest, least invasive, and least traumatic of all weight-loss surgeries. The laparoscopic approach to the surgery also has the advantages of reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay, and quicker recovery. If for any reason the LAP-BAND® System needs to be removed, the stomach generally returns to its original form.

Diet and exercise is always the best way to lose wight, the benefit to using Lap band is that is i adjustable, but there is a risk that the surgeon will place the band too tight. You may have to see the your doctor several times post operatively to have the band adjusted until you reach the desired tightness which is achieved by adding or removing saline from a port that is implanted under the skin. Gastric bypass would be the last option you should ever consider. The surgery is considerably more invasive, and the body will form a considerable amount of scar tissue following the surgery. Gastric bypass can not be adjusted, where as the lap band can.

I would get a second opinion, frankly. Roseanne Barr had the gastric bypass surgery and she has still managed to get fat again. Sharon Osbourne had a good figure for many years then got a little chubby in middle age -- not the best candidate for invasive surgery.

It's not just dieting, you need to figure out why you eat so much and what kind of exercise program is best for you. Regular exercise is much more important than those up and down diets. A regular regimen of danciing, walking, swimming... all pretty easy ways to lose weight -- and a lot less expensive!

Everyone that I've ever met that had gastric bypass has had a horrible ordeal, and some nearly died. The band, I don't know much about that. But, let me tell you this. My Mother-in-Law used the nutrisystem, where they mail you the food, she lost well over a 100lbs. in about 3 months. Please, if you go for the by-pass, have you're heart checked first, and a WELL qualified doctor do the surgery, this is no time for bargain shopping. Good Luck

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

I had a co-worker go with the stomach bypass and he lost nearly 250 pounds with it. I guess he weighed around 500 pounds at the time of the surgery. He broke every office chair in the supervisor's office, so it was definitely time for the surgery.

He looks like heck though. It really aged him and put a lot of gray in his hair.
