I would not order a martini at a dive bar unless you feel like fighting. Same with a Cosmo. I love a frozen margarita but there are a few places I go that I know better than to order it since they are a lot of work and the bartenders do not like it.

The first clue should be when you look around the bar what type of glassware do you see and what type of liqueur/beer do you see sitting around. If you don't see any martini glasses or fancy glasses such as a high ball glass or margarita glass, but you do see beer mugs and shot glasses, chances are that's what you will get - beer and shots. Another indicator would be to look at what others are ordering around you. Does anybody have a fu-fu fruit drink or do they just have beer or a mixed Jack and coke. Sometimes a place that specializes in mixed drinks like martinis will have a glass cooler showcasing their liqueurs they specialize in. Lastly see if you can hunt down a drink menu - if there is none in sight, stick to the basics, beer or liqueur and soda cocktails, likely they are not known for their special drinks

anytime I order a martini style drink (all alcohol) in a dive place, I have to specify a top shelf liquor or it comes with well liquor which is nasty.

Manhattans - Makers Mark
Gin Martinis - Tangeray
Cosmos - Grey Goose and Cointreu
