I will be getting a Macaw in a few months and have been saving the rolls to make salvaging and tearing toys.

Paper towel rolls are a great way to keep them occupied. I weave them through the bars, and my cockatoo especially loves to hang above the roll and rip it apart. My Amazon likes to play tug-o-war with the rolls.

Just be very careful that the rolls were never scented, or dyed. Also, check for glue marks. If there is even a spot where the glue used to be, DO NOT put it in your macaws cage. Even the most minute amount is toxic to a bird, and hardened glue can cause them death.

Yes, those are great. They also like the adding machine rolls to mess with. Have a great new year. I never had a bird that was harmed by these rolls and they do make great foraging toys. They are cheap and Macaws and others love to search, destroy, and get a treat. Have fun.

Paper towel roles make great toys. They are a safe and fun thing for your bird to tear up!

However, I have been told to avoid toilet role ones as these are exposed to so many harmful germs when they are in use (they do sit beside your toilet which you're doing your business after all)

Good luck with your new bird!

Any undyed paper or cardboard is fine.
Here's a good toy. Get a small ccardboard box, cut a couple small holes in it. Get a fruit-and-honey bird treat, and put it in the box. Use a garbage twist tie to attach it to the wall of his cage. You may have to get him started by showing him what's inside, but once he figures out what's in the box, he'll have a great time tearing into it to get the treat out!

Newspaper is fine. Lead free ink is now mandated to prevent lead poisoning in children. Do NOT use paper rolls of any kind as the glue may contain lead or zinc which can be toxic. Why take a chance?

I have an Orange Winged Amazon parrot, that I love dearly. I would be afraid to let her play with paper rolls due to the content of the paper fiber being easily consumed by my parrot. I don't think it would be good for their digestive tract, and it could make your Macaw or any bird very sick.
If you really want to acquire toys for your Macaw, go to a specialty bird store in your area, and purchase one of their specially designed toys. These toys are made of rope, hard plastic, and other materials most likely tested to be safe for a parrot. Ask the salesperson for help in choosing the right size toy and design for your bird. I would suggest you buy one toy at a time. Birds are often afraid of new objects placed inside their cage. Bright colors sometimes frighten them at first. They need time to examine the object for a few days sometimes, and get accustomed to it. Some birds never play with their toys. It depends on the breed of bird sometimes, and perhaps their age.
My best advice to you in general, is to remember that most parrots have a life expectancy of 10-20 years. They can be very loud, and they require a lot of your time, especially in the very beginning. They are very sociable creatures. But, they are very rewarding to have as a pet. Once they bond with you, it's like they are your mate for life.
My advice to you is based on my experience with my Parrot. Good luck and enjoy!

I'd avoid this. He'll tear it up and eat the pieces, and could get sick. And cardboard is not part of a macaw's suggested diet. At least, that's what my brother's does.
