Five grand could get you a decent used BMW 3 series sedan, or a used Audi A80, or a Saab. If you prefer American, you could look at the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, or Pontiac Trans Am, although most of those that are "used" have been used hard. You'd have better luck with the European models; often they are owned by older drivers who take better care of them.
Then there are plenty of sporty Japanese sedans by Honda, Acura, Infiniti, Nissan that are also out there. I'd personally have to cast a vote for a good BMW 3 series sedan, but that's just a personal bias.
Check out the market and get thee some cool wheels.

Try and find a Nissan 240sx. Pre-1993 coupes are best. Very quick and excellent handling. The most popular drifting cars in the world. I would steer clear of Eclipses, Hondas, etc. and stick to 240s, Mazda Miatas, Acura Integras, and possibly Mustangs. Those BMW 3 series are nice cars as well.

dude for 5 grand you could get a nice mitsu 3000gt sl wit like 60000 miles or if u wanted something faster u could get the 3000gt vr4 wit hlike 80000 miles for the same price. the vr4 is better tho because of the AWD soo it could be useful in the winter as well. also because the car is heavier then others in the 2door class, it has little chance of hydroplaning...well dude good luck with finding a car

Datsun 260Z or 280Z
Sporty, good handling, fast and you can still pack a heap of stuff under the hatch!
Had a 260Z for 6 years and regret selling it.
