The movie is a loose adaptation of the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu text wherein the incarnation of god, Krishna, instructs the reluctant warrior Arjun on duty, the nature of the soul, of reality, and so on. The name "Bagger Vance" comes from the Hindi word for god, "bhagvan".

According to Steve Pressfield, the author of the book, that has the same title; he uses Golf as basis for the story of SPIRITUAL TALE of friendship, self-discovery and faith. His story was based on the Hindu epic and scriptural poem"The Bhagavad-Gita", in which Bhagavan is the "Supreme Personality" who teaches his follower Arjuna about life.
(Rotten Tomatoes)
So if it is based on an epic the characters are just made to act out anothers personality in the epic Matt Damon is carrying the personality of Arjuna in the mentioned epic. The author also said that he used golf as basis only.
