I just moved into a new neighborhood. The houses are kinda close together and my window faces the neighbors house. The are working on renovating their house and adding on I believe. How do I politely ask my neighbors to turn their light in a room that they leave on all the time off. The also have a baby.

Some alternative suggestions have been to put up aluminum foil on the windows, but I really don't wanna look like a crack or meth addict.

Meet them while one of them is walking their dog, and start to talk. Maybe note the arrangement of your two houses. Then slowly get around to mentioning the light. And hopefully they won't get their noses out of joint.

The worst they can do is say no, right? So just ask. A few years ago, a neighbor told us that they were allergic to some night blooming jasmine we had. We got rid of it out of consideration for them. And if your neighbor's say, no then either do the aluminum foil or get black curtains to put behind your regular curtains to block the light.

Do you not have curtains? There are such things as window blinds (that you can pull down at night) that are called "black out", almost no light comes through! Or.....take a plate of cookies over, tell them how happy you are they are renovating, you can't wait to see the finished result, and oh by the way, that light shines in my window at night, any chance you can turn it off?

If you let the neighbor know in a kind tone of voice that the light is bothering you they will probably turn it out or at least down. They probably don't even realize that it's causing a problem.

If they can't or won't do anything about it get yourself some room darkening blinds or curtains. You can find these at Target or even Wal-Mart.

A simpler solution might be to get some blinds. If you get the opaque ones, they do not allow any light in and you don't have to risk jeopardizing a possible good relation with your new neighbour. I had such a blind where I lived before as the street light shone right into my bedroom. Slept like a baby after I installed the blind.

Your neighbors have a right to have their lights on. If it's too bright for you, get a light-blocking shade for the room. Light-blocking shades look normal like regular shades, come in a variety of colors and when open, are barely noticeable. You can still have mini-blinds or decorative blinds over them.

Just walk over and ask all they can do is say no - and if they do say no get some black shower curtains they block light real good - that's what I hung up to my windows when I worked nights and had to sleep in the day time.

Get shades or curtains. The last thing you want to be is the demanding new neighbor who wants to change everything. It will get you off on a bad foot right away. You wouldn't want them coming over and telling you what to do inside your home. If the light is INSIDE their house, in my mind they can leave it on if they like.

Ask them in a kind manner, explaining the situation from your perspective. Or, to avoid the confrontation, you could put room darkening or blackout shades on your window and pull them down at night. The inexpensive room darkening roller shades work well. Best of luck to you.

Just ask them. They probably have no idea that it is bothering you. They probably just have it on for extra light or security and they could turn a different light on. If that doesn't work, then get different window coverings.
