I do not care about the Christian notion of Lucifer being a demonic name. I like the name Lucifer and I think of it more as the morning star, which is the actual meaning of the name in Latin.
But would it be mean to give my son a lovely name which has however had the misfortune of being associated with evil?

I can only assume that those who immediately respond with nasty accusations would be Christians as I seem to offend their religion. How lovely.

What makes you angry? I do realise that it might be cruel, and this is why I bother to ask the opinions of others instead of going straight ahead and give him the name.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do prefer Lucius!
Sorry, Hitler's already being used :)

Maybe go with it as a middle name or something. I can see your child's friends asking their parents if its ok to stay over at Lucifer's house. I'd imagine that your son would have some trouble with his girlfriend's parents. It is a nice name though, and not many people have it.

Well my friend, I think that you should be very careful in naming your child Lucifer or anything THOUGHT of as evil or unkind. As the good parent I believe that you are, you would no doubt want to avoid putting your child in harms way (meaning jokes, cruel words, and the like). Many things that are beautiful are best avoided, for the sake of your loved ones if not yourself.

I agree with you about the name's meaning. It means light. Lucifer was one of the top angels before he fell.
Unfortunatly, many would assume your son is evil just by hearing that name.
I also like the name Judas, but that one has a bad rap too.
Perhaps if you must name him Lucifer, call him Lu.

It doesnt matter what you think. It is the common perception of most people on earth that lucifer is an evil creature worth much disdain and unfortunately that is the way your child would be seen. As for you , you would be looked at as a devil worshipper and your child would be looked down upon be nearly everyone. Do your child a favor and name him bob or lucy or even jeff. Dont ruin your childs life before it even gets started.

Actually, I don't necessarily think it to be unkind, because before Lucifer became the "Devil" he was an angel in heaven, well, to be more specific, the best angel in heaven and he was the angel of music. But to my opinion, yes, I think that would be unkind because Lucifer sounds kind of offensive to religious people, and it could get your child the permission to be mocked at by other peers, so my suggestion-DON'T name your kid Lucifer.

As parents we have the right, so we could name our children what ever we want. We may find the name nice and cute. A name is just a name but it's the child that has to live with whatever you name them. So think about it and I'm sure you'll come up with a name that both you and your child could be comfortable with.

Sadly in this type of society, the stigma would be aweful. I personally believe (despite being raised catholic) that he was given a bad rap.....he has only done what God asked.
It is a wonderful name though....I offer up Ariel Lucius...a name of an child angel, also Aramis

Unfortunately, because of Christian fundamentalist ignorance, it would not be a good idea. BUt Gwyneth Paltrow called her son Moses, and no one seems to think that is cruel....Personally I like the sound of the name Lucifer though.

It might be mean, but I personally like the idea. He would certainly catch some flack, though. You might tone it down to Lucius, or something like that. I have always wanted to name my cat Lucifer, but so far my wife won't hear of it.
So, if you don't mind him having to explain what "Lucifer" really means for the rest of life, go for it...

Doesn't Lucifer mean bringer of light or something like that? If so then I see nothing wrong with the name.
ps: ignore my answer I read the rest of the question and see that you have the meaning there.
