it would be soooooo wrong to put that poor dog to sleep..Its sooo natural for him to react the way he did... you can not punish him unless you caught him in the act... he was only going on instinct..... if you cant forgive him then find him a freind or family to care for him... but the right thing to do would be apologize to your roommate and forgive your dog... he did not do it just to be mean/bad... forgive him and love him the rest of his life... he has been your family for to long now not to forgive him...good luck..smile
addition: wow there are alot of people that feel the same way....listen to all of them prior to doing something drastic... your best freind deserves that...smile

Personally if this is your attitude towards your pet I would say you should give up owning animals all together. First off you got a poodle, and then a bird, bad combo. Then you obviously didn't teach the dog that the bird was not food, so acting on its natural instinct the dog ate the bird. Thats what happens with animals. Peditor vs prey, its how life works. What you should have done is taught the dog that the bird was not prey by monitoring them, and introducing them, thats what we do with all new pets at our house with great sucess. But if you're going to be so mad at your dog for eating the bird, which is its natural instinct if you haven't told him that he shouldn't, that you want to put him down, then you just shouldn't own animals! Grow up for heavens sake and realize that what your dog did is only natural! I would say find this poor creature a loving home and stop owning pets!

dogs do wierd things and it was not the dogs fault entirely.. he probably thought it was a toy.. doggs don't know when they have been to rough. i think if you are that angry bwith the dog give it a new home. the only reason to put it down if it is in a lot of pain from age and is dying anyways(you know take it out of it's misery) or if turns on a human being. not for going after and killing a bird. dogs are natural hunters of all types of smaller animals so it is normal what happened it is up to you now to just disapline and forgive your dog whom has been part of your life for a long time. or give it away. mind you though the dog is 14 he/she is coming to the end of their life expectantly anyways why not keep for the next couple years it'll be around. learn from this though.. next time you get a dog and bird get them used to eachother as to the dog would be less likely to attack bird after it knows it too is a pet of yours.

Putting a dog down that has given you unconditional love and shown no aggression for 14 years over an incident that would have NEVER occured if the humans around him had done their jobs properly is ridiculous. Your roommate is to blame for this incident (by not properly securing the bird); not the dog (who was just doing what its instincts told it to do).
If you can't forgive your dog, then let a no-kill rescue take him in and find a placement for him. He shouldn't have to die for someone else's mistake.

I would severely have a go at the person that left the cage door open!!! Your room mate should have been more responsible!! You cannot blame the dog for someone else's mistake! The dog did what any dog would do! For goodness sake, you cannot end your dogs life for that. If your dog is fit and healthy, you would be very selfish. Please do not take your anger out on your dog!!Your room mate for being irresponsible, should except the blame!!! Think about it!!

I have a poodle and a bird too. I know how I would feel if this happened to me, so I can empathise. My poodle is very curious about the bird, but she knows not to go near the cage and I can even have them both out on the couch together.
Please let your anger pass! Your relationship with your dog is way more important to you than you realize right now. Forgive him.

Capital punishment isn't going to teach the dog or anyone else any lessons. You should only have dogs put down when they're an actual danger to humanity or are in severe pain. Just forgive and forget, the dog doesn't know any better.

I wouldn't have him put down for that. His actions just show his natural predator instincts. It's not like you trained him not to kill birds. You might want to give him to a different home if you feel this strongly, but don't put him down(unless he has some horrible ilness or something).
