I agree with “owenmurdoch” . The Quad ESL electrostatic was the greatest speaker ever made! If you can find a pair – buy them. They are no longer manufactured.

The best speakers still in production are the magical panel speakers primarily dominated by two brands, Martin Logan and Magnepan. They are based on different technologies but both sound very different to paper cone speakers

Martin Logan electrostatic speakers are easier to find. They can be found at independent audio solons and Magnolia stores. If used speakers are acceptable my favorite speaker under $2500 is the Aerius.

Magnepan’s are available only at independent audio solons and much harder to find. Magnepan has a web only special on their least expensive speaker – a 60 day money back guarantee and 100% credit toward better models for one year. Personally, would travel to the closest store and listen prior to purchasing.

Once you’ve heard these speakers you’ll never be satisfied with box speakers and paper cones again.

The best speaker for your computer is the NHT M-00. Not the easiest to find.

Good Luck.

Price is relative, because I'm sure you don't want to be
spending $250,000 for speakers (and you can easily if
you wanted), so I'll try to give you the best for a nominal
price range that will be good for your computer system.

Okay, if you don't have a separate receiver to power the
speakers, I would recommend some powered monitors
that music studios use when mastering audio tracks. A
great system I would suggest...

SPEAKERS: Event Studio Precision 8 Powered Monitors
POWERED SUBWOOFER: Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk 3 w/Turbocharger

With your computer, you will have to have a surround sound
audio card and software to do 5.1 surround sound or higher.
If you include a separate home theater surround sound recei-
ver to the mix, you will have a lot more choices for speakers.

For instance, the best system I can suggest for under $10k
would be from Silverline Audio and again Hsu Research...

SPEAKERS: Silverline Audio Prelude
POWERED SUBWOOFER: Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk 3 w/Turbocharger

If you want more specific help on what you're trying to do, go
ahead and e-mail me, and I'm sure I can better help you here.

Just give me a maximum price and the room size your com-
puter system is in to give me more of an idea of your criteria.

Well, you've heard that size doesn't matter, right? Well, at least in speakers that's exactly right. I love the sound from the speakers in my basement that go with my home theater. The maker? Me. I gathered raw speakers, cabinets, wire, and crossovers from the best brands in the business off the 'net. Bang & Olufsen, Eminence, etc.
They sound so real that I have people take a seat in their midst and I put in a CD with car sounds on it. I queue the CD to the sound and ask the person to close their eyes. As the CD plays, the listener, as if on cue, quickly opens their eyes and looks for the car in the room.
Now that's good sound.
But other than those, Paradigm, Infinity Gold, B&W, Morel, on and on. It really depends on your ears and how determined you are to have just the right sound.

The best available would be custom made and cost about £20,000 or more.

I created the speakers in my room, and it only cost me a total of £400, but if you don't have the knowledge on how to make speakers, the kind of set-up I have will cost you another 20 grand.

And are you just going for a "bigger the better" thing because your compensating for a lack of something else, like, not enough RAM, larger speakers are very rarely better, you need to get speakers sized up for proportion to where they're going to be placed, and what device they're going to be used for.

i got a pair of mid-1970's realistic mach 1's (15" woofer, 1" tweeter, mid-range horn) at a thrift store for 50 bucks. i then found a mid-1980's realistic digital reciever at another thrift store for 40 bucks. i wired the woofers to the reciever's B speaker outputs and the mid/tweeter to the A speaker outputs (basically, i split the crossover circuitry). the volume knob goes up to 40 but neither me nor the house can stand it past 25 (it reaches over 130dB in a medium-sized room) and there is absolutely no distortion (just some sibilance) anywhere all the way up the dial. i have it hooked up to my pc using just headphone-to-rca cable and my turntable using the phono input. sounds amazing and all at less than $100! vintage equipment is the bomb (as some of the answerers have said in not so many words), and if you are lucky enough to profit off of some moron willing to part with it for peanuts then go for it.

If your into quality you need to measure your room and go & see a speaker specialist!! The size & shape of your room will effect the quality of sound.

And, with really good speakers, the sound clarity can be so good that you can think it isn't loud when it actually is. So, just remember, you only have one set of ears!!! Loudness isn't the only thing to concider.

Personnally my hubby has a Bose set-up and it is just mind blowing!! Not just for music but for movies too. When we first set it up and started playing stuff through them we kept hearing things we had never noticed in sound tracks or music before.

But like I said, go see a speaker specialist. They will sit you in a room and play music through a variety of speakers. We're all differant in our tastes. What I like you may hate.

Good luck!
