An optometric physician, aka optometrist, is someone trained professionally who has a license to perform eye exams and prescribe glasses or contacts. They can diagnose some minor eye problems and recommend some other treatments. They are NOT medical doctors. An opthalmologist, on the other hand, IS a medical doctor who specializes in eye health. Think of an optometrist being for vision and an opthalmologist being for eye health/diseases of the eye (and remember that an optometrist did NOT go to medical school)
