These people who are telling you to get another doctor who 'won't try to treat you with only meds' completely misunderstand your question.
They're right, you should not only be reciving medication. While it may be true that you have a chem imbalance, that would have been there since you were born and will have caused other psychological damage that CANNOT be treated with meds. It is important that you sort out where the physical affliction ends and where the psychological damage begins.
I understand that you are not an 'open' person and 'anti-social', that's *why* you need to see a therapist. These may be symptoms of the psychological damage done by years of not reciving either therapy or meds. Maybe you ARE an open/social person underneth the shadow of your depression and you just don't know it.
Even if you do need to take medication to balance you for the rest of your life, it is important to couple that with individual therapy. Having only drugs, while it may balance you out, still risks dependance and addiction.
You are very lucky to have a doctor that is involved enough to care about what is right for you and not give you pills and send you on your way.
If you do have an imbalance, your doctor will resume your medications after some therapy.
The fact that you are so opposed to seeing a theripist is a very serious indication of how badly you *need* to see one. This is a matter of doing something difficult because it's worth doing. You're worth healing entirely, not be given a perscription Band-Aid.

Just try the therapist. They may be more qualified to decide what may help. Depression an bi polar are alot alike. Only the therapist would know. Meds for depression may make bipolar worse or may work for a short period of time, then stop.

I would seek a new doctor, but you also need to work through the root of your problems. Drugs alone can not solve your problems, but they can help. Therapy and medications work hand and hand.
Yes, there is a chemical imbalance, but other issues are at work along with the chemical imbalance. You also need new skills to help deal with the issues your chemical imbalance causes. Drugs alone are not the end all and be all.
Perhaps you need to seek help from a Psychiatrist, they are different than a psychologist. They are actually medical doctors who can prescribe medication. This type of doctor should be able to help you in all areas and will know which issues medication will help and which areas you might need therapy for.
He is also more educated on your issues that are chemical imbalance and only respond to medication.

It depends how your insurence works, if you want to get a new pshciatrist you may have to go back to your primary and get a referral but usually you will see a psychitrist for meds a nd a psycologist for discussing the reasons why you are feeling the way your are.

Yes, find a new doctor. One who won't try to treat you only with pills. Next, try to heal yourself. I'm manic depressive and was on medication for a little while, but I found that, once I knew what was going on with me, I was able to "take charge" and recognized my manic/depressive episodes for what they were and deal with them accordingly. If you want to get better, start with a better mind set.

Yeah, you need to get back on medication, although therapy may also help you with other things. Go to a psychiatrist's office instead of a doctor's office.
