My 5 yr old. spent the weekend at the hospital (I was with her the entire time..) cause she had 4 seizures total. 1 home, 1 en route in the ambulance, 2 in the ER.
CSF was negative. Cat scan negative, chest x~ray negative, blood work ok. EEG, still waiting for the results, may take a week.
Trying to rule out Epilepsy.....any info appreciated....

in a previous question, my daughter was sick and even went to the hospital. two days later she was back there.. very dehydrated, vomiting, fever, and the seizures... they mentioned Febrile seizures but we are still waiting for the EEG results. They did the spinal and ruled out Menengitis. I will look into the other issues you have brought up also. She has an appt. tomorrow with her Dr.
The Pediatric Neurologist will be reading the EEG. Thanks again for all the info. coming in...TRULY Appreciated!!

had follow~up visit at the Dr. today. even though we are waiting for the EEG results, she is leaning towards the seizures being Febrile seizures. With the history of my daughter being sick with fever and vomiting and being dehydrated, etc. So that looks like it may have been the cause.Still Praying that is the answer.
Just wanted to Thank everyone that answered and let you know they were appreciated and opened my eyes to the great, caring community here on yahoo answers.

Before I read your "Additional Details" I was thinking about febrile convulsions and am pleased that they believe this could be the cause.
I'm a paramedic and generally there are several causes of seizures. Diabetes (hypoglycemic episode) - blood tests would have ruled this out very quickly. Head trauma - obviously you know if this had happened. Epilepsy - still waiting on EEG results. Brain lesion /tumor - cat scan was negative. Oxygen deprivation - again, you would know of any event such as this.
Other causes (drugs, alcohol) aren't likely to apply to a child.

Given the age of your child and the talk of possible febrile convulsions, I would be very hopeful that this is the cause. Febrile convulsions are not uncommon amongst children and is something they grow out of. It does not mean they become epileptic or otherwise have seizures or other problems as they get older.
Did they paramedics take a temperature as part of their assessment? It sounds like the paramedics in your area may not carry midazolam or other ant-convulsant drugs. I would give a fitting patient a dose and the seizures would usually not recur in my presence.

Fingers crossed for the EEG results, I sincerely hope it was just febrile in cause.

I have a large history of seizures in my family, i have epilepsy. My sisters daughter had the same problem when she was 3. Had about 4 seizures in one day, all tests were negative, and it never happened again. The doctors said that she could have had the seizures because she was dehydrated, or many other problems. It could just have been a freak thing that happened, or something more serious, you should probably visit a neurologist if you are concerned about epilepsy. Also, EEG's don't always give the correct results, so make sure to keep and eye out for other symptoms.

My 19 month old daughter had her first seizure at 4 months old. She had 3 total that day , and was tested for everything under the sun . It is a hard thing to go through. She had another one in May @ 11 months, after having a clear EEG a week prior. They called it a breakthrough seizure because she was already on med which they promptly increased. She has been ok since then but we just take one day at a time.

My 7 year old has Epilepsy, and has had had it since birth.
He suffers from 2 types- Grand Mal and Petit-Mal.
Grand Mal seizures are the typical ones you see(convulsions, etc) and Petit-Mal are also called abscence seizures(they look like they are staring off into space, but will not respond when you call their name).
When we adopted our son, we had no idea that he had seizures(great foster parents denying he had them) until he was with us for 5 weeks and he had an abscence seizure in the car(we FLIPPED out.. having no idea what happened). Took him to the ER and they told us that he was having them since he was 2 weeks old. He was fine and we were able to keep him off meds until May of 2003 when he had a Grand-Mal seizure which lasted 30 minutes. He was then put on Tegretol and we have been good ever since. In fact, we are now in the process of weaning him off the meds because he has been seizure free for 2 years.
Having a child with Epilepsy is scary(I still get very paranoid every morning he gets on the bus for school), but it is manageable.
Sometimes children will have seizures once, and never have them again, and they go on to live very normal lives. My son tended to have them when he had a growth spurt.
If you need any more information(or just to chat), please don't hesistate to email me at ninamcguinness@yahoo.com, and I will be more than happy to help.
I hope your daughter(and you:D) feel better soon.

I don't have a child whose had seizures but I have worked with them and I know people who have had them. The general rule is, one seizure is a one-off but more than that and they'll do tests to ensure whether or not the child is epileptic and the seizures were not brought on by another condition (meningitis, a metabolic condition, a head injury, etc).

If your daughter is diagnosed with epilepsy, don't see it as the end of her life. She will be given the best drugs to control her symptoms (they may need to play around with drugs and dosage and always speak up if you feel meds aren't agreeing with her) and more than likely, will attend an epilepsy clinic and be subscribed to an epilepsy nurse who wil direct you to information as well as support you, your child and your family. Also, she's so young that she may well out-grow the condition.

My little cousin went through seizure and black outs at the same age. It took a few years and several doctors. Ask them to run an EKG and look for the Long QT. I am not a doctor, but we have all had to have annual checks because we found out she has a heart condition call Long QT Syndrome. It has to be looked for and most doctors are not trained to see it unless they are asked to look for it. My little cousin is now 19yrs old and living a wonderful life. She has been on meds since she was 5, but they said she woul dnot make it to puberty. Also, she goes to a hospital in Cleveland, Oh and I know she also visited a Dr at Jackson Memorial in Miami, FL. I wish I had more info! My heart goes out to you! Good Luck! and God Bless!

frequently they might have seizures in the journey that they are over medicated. possibly yoour baby is allergic to those meds. that would want to reason it. He would have epilepsy or another condition. Years in the past that became undesirable yet now they could administration it with meds. solid success

My sister had seizures one day, it was really weird, I think she was around 9 years old at the time. After all the testing, they figured out that she has really low blood sugar. She's modified her diet and she's very healthy now. Good luck! I hope she's okay!
