I know I've asked five million questions re: this upcoming tattoo but it's my first one and I want to make sure that I follow "tattoo etiquette"....my tattoo is costing $700....would this be a good tip? Artist is Chinese and so am i so i was going to give $88 (8 is good luck in Chinese) in a Chinese red envelope....is that an adequate tip or too much or - thoughts? I figure that $88 isn't too much since the ink and design are portrait work and customized and such. Thoughts?

Also - to Nicole - pls don't lecture about whether to get the tattoo or not....you don't know me and you don't know anything about me financially, charity wise or whatsoever. =)

An 88 dollar tip is a good number. Not only are you saying thank you for your time but also for letting me be your customer. You have put a lot of thought into the kind of tat you want and where you want it. I assume that the artist has walked you through the process. I am also assuming that you have put a lot of thought into the amount of the tip as well as the way you will deliver the tip. Your artist will appreciate this gesture.
As for those who are against tattoos. Remember they are not for everybody so don't judge. It is the same as judging because of someones color. You may not no the reason for the tattoo. I personally have one in memory of my father, for all of the fallen b/c of 9/11, I have one of my kids, and one when I got clean and turned my life toward the Lord. So please don't judge b.c we have tattoos

There is no percentage to go by. Your artist will be happy with whatever you give him that is above and beyond what you had to pay for the art. It is rare that a tip is given to a receptionist/schedule person. Just give the artist whatever you think would be a good tip. And 88 bucks is a good tip. 20 is the most common. The tattoos are expensive because tattoo artists make a lot of money on the work. Believe me, they are getting paid.

I think thats a really thoughtfull tip. Personally I would go for more depending on the quality of the work. You obviously have done your research on the artist otherwise you wouldnt pay $700 for the piece. I have always made sure to tip my artist very well. I got a small one done in May that only cost $75. I tipped the woman $25 because she was incredible. Most artists depend on only their tips. Your idea & meaning behind the $88 & envelope show you really appreciative. Maybe you should pay a total of $888 in this case. Do whatever you fell comfy with! Good Luck! Hope it looks awesome!

As you can see, there are a lot of foolish people who think that tattoo artists should not be tipped, or tipped a small amount (5%?). The artists work hard, and deal with a lot of crap from people. I know that the same percentage you would tip in a restaurant applies. I think your idea sounds charming, in all honesty. It shows thought and consideration for your artist.

Move the decimal point over twice, $70 is 10%. Now the best thing is anything over 20%. So there you go, although $88 is not bad, but with a $700 tatt you better go all the way.

customary tipping should be anywhere from 15-20 percent.but that is when you go to restaurants. ihave 6 tattoos. i always tipped 10% but i think the artist would be happy if you gave him 70$$. good luck. keep up the art

Tipping is really easy do what makes you feel good!forget what other people say tip from the heart.......since this is your first tattoo "88" and the red envelope is your own personal touch to make the event special and memorable for you and the artist!karma rules............a tattoo is for life! at least that's what i believe.

i usually tip between 10 and 15% depending on the tat not just the price (size, location, amount of detail) ive been going to the same shop for years and have developed some pretty rad long lasting friendships... so im assuming thats not a bad amount to tip ;)

You should give AT LEAST 20% ($140), if not more. I usually tip around 35% since all of my work is custom.
