I have a ten year old son. He has a stomach bug right now. and I was wondering when I should get worried about
Dehydration. he started vomiting yesterday in the afternoon. He can't hold anything down. and I tried the tablespoon an hour thing. He was vomiting with that too. Although it was mostly dry heaving. He was crying about being thirsty so I stopped the process. I don't know whether I should make a dr. appt. he has no fever . What do you recomend what do I look for regarding dehydration. I bought him some pedialyte popsicles.and wonder if I should start the tablespoon thing again. Any thoughts?

is he peeing? children should have at least 4 urinations per day..if not he's dehydrated. if he cries, is there tears? if not, he's dehydrated.

i would make the appointment, but in the meantime...keep trying to get him to get SOMETHING down. a spoonfull of jello, a bite off the popsicle...no juice though. and don't give him anythign to eat just yet. maybe tomorrow afternoon try the B.R.A.T diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast).

good luck! just went through this with my 16 month old.

Yes, you should keep it in mind that it's very easy for him to become dehydrated. Keep doing the tablespoon of water thing, or try a tablespoon of Pedialyte liquid. You could take him to the ER and they will probably give him an IV to hydrate him, in fact that might be your best bet since dehydration can set in quickly. They can also put something in the IV to stop the nausea. Check his heart rate, if it's faster than usual then he could be dehydrated. Good luck, I hope he feels better soon!
P.S.- Don't give him medicine on your own to keep him from throwing up or to stop diarrhea if he has it, sometimes their bodies just need to rid themselves of all the bad stuff and the medicine stops that from happening. If you do want to give him meds, ask the Dr. first.

I would try the Popsicles as well as some saltines, the salt will help him to avoid dehydration. (strange huh?) If he continues vomiting for another 24 hours I would take him to the DR. Watch him for signs such as lethargy, not urinating (if he is urinating he is not dangerously dehydrated), and sunken looking eyes.
The stomach bug is nasty, but be patient he will be OK. Keep up with those Popsicles, and let him take small sips of water or sprite, or juice.
Good Luck!!

My daughter is 11 and Ive dealt with this for a week! She couldnt hold water down but sprite did wonders, she slept alot which helped because she was weak. I also let her have ice chips when she wanted water and those stayed down. I think its just a bug that has to run its course. Good luck though and I hope your son feels better soon!

I would goahead and make an appt. for him. Better safe than sorry. I am not sure all the signs of dehydration but I do know thier heart rate will become more rapid. Hope he feels better soon and dont forget to take extra Vitimins for yourself so you dont get sick too.

I would take him to a doctor just in case. And try giving him sprite! For some reason Sprite is a miracle drink during my stomach bugs!

If he can't keep even small amounts of liquid down then he needs medical attention. I'd take him to the ER if he hasn't been able to keep anything down for 12 hours.

Try giving him anti nausa medicine there is a good one by little tummies it taste ok, see if that will help. make sure he is peeing a simple way is to look in his mouth to see if it is wet, if not take him to ther ER for fluids. Also try giving him just crushed ice.

Lemon lime gator-aid. It works wonders! Just don't let him run around too much because it makes you feel like you are not so sick. Even though you still are. Good luck!
