My old man killed a 7 and a half foot grizzly bear in 77 in Alaska with that very caliber, his buddy had shot it with a 30/06 and it took off, they started to track it ,then it started to stalk them,so when it got close enough he finished him off.

The 444 marlin is a good brush gun, low speed, high weight projectile, not likely to be deflected by small twigs and branches. However actual energy of the cartridge is less than a 30:06. For the largest north American game the 338 Winchester magnum was my first choice.

For the most part it will take down anything. Lion bear or elk and deer. It is a bush gun built for close range and wont do great distances. It will kill an elephant if you place your round well.
If you want a large caliber gun to hunt with the 444 is a good round.
The 454 and 458 magnum rounds will also take down anything.
I've dropped bear mountain lion and bighorn with my 444 I have also dropped elk deer and wild pigs. Moose have gotten up to argue and at the range of the rifle... That's a bit close to have an upset moose coming at you. You have got to place your shot well and don't take "chance" shots at all.

The 444 Marlin was built for plowing brush. It is a forest and scrub hunting gun with few competitors. It is not built to hunt distances and when you get into game that get upset when you shoot them. I would suggest you carry something that allows for distance. Anything bigger than a grizzly might take a gun with a longer reach. When shooting grizzly you have to place your shot well.

It should take game up to Moose in North American. As far as dangerous game (Grizzly, and African game such as lions & leopards, etc.) I would use a dangerous game rifle. Quick answer, of course the .444 Marlin will kill lions & bears but do you want to beat your life on it? For dangerous game I'd use a .338 or .375 or even one of the Nitro Espress double-rifles.

Elephant have been killed by the thousands with 6.5mm rifles, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. The 444 is a good deer cartridge. You owe it to the animals to use enough gun.

Yes, but a lot depends on the ammunition, range, and placement of the shot, as with any rifle.

yes providing you can PLACE the bullet where it will do it job effectivly but with such a heavy peice of lead your trajectory will be a large arch so the closer you are the better chance you have to bring the animal down

Yes, with proper loading and proper bullet placement. Keep the range close.
