In the case of the little girl being killed by a pitbull, why was it there in the first place? Will the uncle be procecuted for owning a dog that is illigal in the UK?
Pitbulls in the UK were put on the dangerous dogs act back in 1982. All pitbulls at the time were required to be castrated or neutered and to be muzzled at all times. So in theory there shud be no pitbulls or cross pitbulls under the age of 14 in the UK. The people that have breed them over the past 14 years shud be procecuted. They are just mindless selfish people who have no respect for the law or the poor dogs that end up being destoryed because idiots think its hard to have a macho dog by their side. All dogs are breed for differant purposes. Terriers were breed to fight and kill. It's their instinct. Pitbulls were breed to fight bulls to the end and like staffies are able to lock their jaws when they get a good grip. A squeekling child to a terrier is like an injured animal and it's instinct just cums out.

I think a lot of people don't understand me on this question. If people read it properly they will see that I am not ignorant to pitbulls. I am sorry if I've offended any pitbull owners but it is Illegel to own or breed a pitbull in the UK, the same as it is to own an unlicenced gun. I'm not even blaming dogs of any breed, shape or size. I am on the dogs side 100%.

Pitbulls are nice dogs but it depends on the owner. If pitbulls have gang bangers as owners then most likely all they will want to do it kill. I have a pitbull and she was wonderful and great around kids.

Fatal attacks since 1975 have been attributed to over 30 different dog breeds yet all the media can talk about are Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, or Akitas. Size alone is not an accurate indicator of which dogs are capable of killing and which dogs are not. In October of 2000, a baby was killed by a four pound family Pomeranian dog in California. In February of 2002, a Jack Russell Terrier mauled a 6 week old baby in Tennessee. BSL is a flawed concept from the moment it is conceived. In most cases the dogs are targeted leaving the owner, which is the responsible, rational thinking party, out of it.

Some impose fines along with their laws but are often not enforced to the maximum so the owner gets away with a slap on the wrist.
Dogs are not the problem and BSL does not reconize this. People are the problem and until we find a way to punish people for their neglectful actions which allow dogs to bite and terrorize the public we will never stop the problem.Banning pit-bull-type dogs is not the answer. In 1991 when the United Kingdom banned pit bulls it was found that even after the pit bull population steeply declined, the number dog bite incidents remained the same. Why? The number of irresponsible dog owners stayed the same. The fact is that dog bites rarely happen randomly to people walking down the street. Most dog bites (77 percent) happen to a family member or a friend. The majority of bites are perpetrated by un-neutered male dogs.

A good knowleadgeable account of what happened. This breed of dogs (the pit-bull) were bred for hunting large prey which simply means they do not back away from fight. It is their genetic make-up which is perserved through human intervention to keep them this way. In all cases, the blame / onus should lie with the owners in acquiring such an animal in the first place. Generally pet owners should have a good and serious understanding of the nature and predisposition of their pets towards other animal and human counterparts. The number of times I hear dog owners defend their dog's behaviour with remarks "oh...this has never happened before!" is so annoying. However, in the light of the recent case in Merceyside, the uncle should be prosecuted for OWNING A PROHIBITED DOG in the first place.

Sorry about everything that has happened, but I love my pit bull. I have had him since he was 3 weeks old and he is now 6. He has been raised in a home with all females. He is the best dog ever. All I can say is I am a responsible pit bull owner. He is never left unattended I say BAN THE DEED NOT THE BREED!

Nobody should blame the dog blame the owner he knew the dog had a violent past so why leave a little girl with it. If it had been trained properly then none of this would of happened.

They actually do not lock their jaws, they just have alot of determination. And while originally bred to be dog/animal aggressive, they were not bred to be people aggressive. Generally those bad with people were quickly killed. Granted, any dog should not be left alone with children. A pomeranian can (and has) killed a baby, a Jack Russell terrier has maimed a child recently...and there are other cases of various breeds hurting/killing.

I hope the uncle gets prosecuted, but it sounds like one of those lads who bought the dog because of its reputation, I live not far from where the girl was mauled, I think that its awful what happened, although I dont think this will put off young lads buyin these types of dogs, young lads dont think the same way an older man would, safety for the public.

I SO agree with you. I'm a mother and I hate these dogs. Not the animal itself but what they can do! And no, it's not always the owner who's guilty if something bad happens. That breed is crazy! People need a license for them in Europe, and in the US I kinda think they have him as a status thing. I mean, come on, who needs a fighting dog in their yards? Stupid.

One attacked my dog , while we were out for a walk. I couldn't get it off my dog, so I killed the pit bull. And made the owner pay the vet's bills for my dog. They should be shot on sight.
Any pit bull owners want to set their dog on me ?
