Do you believe it is "encouraged" it is not encouraged
It is a matrix of confusion truth mixed with lies... it is one of many that the people become trapped in and can't find a way out.
You had to face death in war so that now you can see through it.
Now that you can see it (religion) for what it is forget the others still trapped in the matrix of religion... it is your action now that is required so they might see it but it is only through action will others see it.
You can become all you wish... but you will have to become it first.
This book came to my mind "The 21st Century Brain" I think you might like it. I recommend researching, reading science and then religion then science then religion and eventually you will see the TWO and know how to make them ONE. In one you will find peace.
Seek the common truth and test everything by considering the world. "For every question an answer can be found in nature"

First, your question is based on the assumption that it does encourage delusion. This is of course only attainable from a prejudicial perspective that assumes authority over those who are religious, which in of itself can be assumed to be a predisposition to self delusional opinion.
Let's try for a moment to forget that there is much delusion within the ranks of the "logical" non-religious, some of very hostile foundations ... we'll try. Why not? The non-religious seem to have forgotten, or worse, excused those persons and actions. But we'll push on ... what of the "encouragement" of delusion in history by the haters of religion or the self-enlightened masters of "logic" and "reason"? For there is much. For instance, there is common belief in non-substantiated "facts" that are still in the process of evidence gathering as if it is "truth" - there is much encouragement to accept these notions as total fact - a final answer to all, if you will. Why? Simply because the ideas are in direct opposition to religion. Yet, it begs the question of "why isn't there proof?" How is it that the non-religious can accept unfounded ideas as fact, while demanding the burden of proof upon everyone else. Why are unproven claims of non-believers considered acceptable as truth, while they exempt themselves from the burden of proof on those claims? Back to the point...
Religion does not for the most part encourage delusional acts, but through interpretation, persons are capable of approaching their ideas of their interpretations in different manners, and that of itself can - on the surface - produce the effect of some occasional delusional people. But is the religion the cause for this, any more than some non-religions rhetorical publications or group thought that produces delusional behavior? No, not in the least.
So perhaps, the problem is not with the religions themselves, but in the ever-capable lack of understanding by those who assume too much. Perhaps, the delusion is because of the handlers called "people", for people and their action from all groups have had their share of the obscure; some to the endangerment of others.
For those that pretend to know "religion", and claim authority above it (though having never taken part of), is very much like a third grader reading a cookbook, but having never attempted to understand and apply what is recommended in the book through the recipes. They think they understand. But until they actually practice the concepts, they will never understand.
For another instance, (only one out of a million possibilities for most) I cannot pretend to be an expert at NASCAR, when I have never stepped inside of the car, the pit or the race itself, even though I know a great deal about it from a historical and documentary study. Unless I actually make the leap and try to become a driver or a pit crew mechanic, I can only assume from what I have read. This is the same for those who have read about religion, but have never really gone in under the hood and tried to become a part of it. You cannot know "why" or "how" until you have sincerely attempted it on honest grounds.
This is why an atheist will never understand when a professor or researcher becomes a religious person during or after their career. Because the person fearful (or hateful) of "religion" will never allow themselves to associate or be found in the company of religion, let alone "give it a shot". It is a prejudice not unlike racism or any other form of unreasonable discrimination.
So ... there were no biblical references, no imagined interpretations or ignorance, but a clear and logical digest. Does this answer the question? Of course not, because to understand, one must clear away the prejudice, bigotry and the temptation to stereotype. An action that most "non-believers" cannot do without pain.
So, why do atheists encourage self-righteous indignation supported by unsubstantiated "facts", as if they are the only ones possessing the truth? That is delusional as well as any other delusion, for it based on the assumptions for most from the opinion of others without personal verification of the opinions. In other words, how do you know your source is correct, when you haven't done the research yourself? Most atheists assume the great (and somewhat holy) atheists are correct, without attempting to verify the information. Interesting, to say the least.

...and you need to 'marry' logic and intuition. When you can assemble all the parts like a puzzle, you will experience 'the big picture', and perceive through the eyes of the whole...And the delusion will become a valid portion of the conclusion. Deluded/brainwashed people make better followers, they have little independent thought and won't question their leaders or their religion's practices. Religions need followers to survive, using fear and delusion can produce fanatical followers who will do anything to serve - just look at Hitler, master brainwasher.

Because, according to psychologists, delusions, to the individual, are based on faith. They cannot PROVE they are there, but still have FAITH that they are there. In that context, there is nothing separating faith and delusion. Neither require logic, reason, proof or tangible evidence.
I am not religious, but I doubt preachers and fathers are telling their followers to be delusional. I think its just 'birds of feather' kind of thinking. Its all about seeing things or believing things that are not there. In a religious persons mind, it is better to believe in a lie than nothing at all.

Satan is the author of deception....
Those religions who ignored the veracity of God's Word (Scripture) are subject to being deceived....
The reason Satan cannot stand the scripture is because he cannot deceive those who hold to it and use it against him as Jesus did in the temptations in the wilderness.

Because then people are easier to keep in church. People put out millions tithing, if they're more passive it's easier to get more. Religion is becoming a business more than a spiritual experience.
