There is a cookie jar with cookies in it at work in our kitchen.
Everytime I go to make myself a coffee, I want a cookie.
However, due to the hygene practices of some employees such as not washing hands after using the bathroom, I wonder whether it would be safe bacteria wise seeing that others would have put their hands on the jar and in there for a cookie.
Is there any risk or am I overacting here?
This is a serious question.
Thanks

Just to add, the cookies are not individually wrapped. They are just sitting in a jar togather.

Yea... i wouldn't eat the cookie!!! if i were you. i'd take my OWN box of cookies and leave them in my desk.
and everytme i had a coffee.. i'd whip out my very own very sanitary cookie fro myself!
and i'd make sure they were the most delicious cookies on earth.. to make my coworkers jealous..lol

Honestly, because others do have poor hygiene, I would not touch those cookies. You could end up getting the flu or a cold if someone has reached in the jar after sneezing and putting their hand over their mouth. If the cookies are not wrapped individually, I would leave them alone. I always take my own food so I know nobody has messed with it.

How about bringing in your own little stash of cookies?
I know what you mean about the whole "not sure how hygienic others are". Being cooped up in an office is bad enough, and recycled air and such things our bodies are already fighting, only to force an object just TEEMING with nasties into it! You are not over-reacting~ you are right on cue with your instincts to NOT touch the cookies!

There are people that don't wash their hands after wiping themselves after taking a poop. Those same people would not think twice about eating a cookie. So no. But importantly, their marks are left on everything else they touch such as handrails, door knobs, other things like that.

As a confirmed germ-o-phobic, I think you are doing the right thing. Imagine a scenario about a co-worker using the bathroom, not washing up afterward, and deciding they need a cookie!!! EWWWWWWWW!!! (Not to mention the handle is loaded with germs too....as well as the cookies.) Hope I didn't gross you out too much! Happy New Year...stay healthy!

Lots of E.coli in communal cookie jars, as well as other bacteria floating around. I wouldn't unless they are individually wrapped.

It is the same risk as touching the door handle of the bathroom and not immediately washing your hands. You know most of your employees though!
